Upstate New York is a term referring to the state of New York situated north of the New York City metropolitan area, thus including the vast majority of the state's geographical area. Upstate New York is referenced in contrast to Downstate New York, the latter of which includes New York City, Long Island and the lower Hudson Valley. Upstate New York is home to non-fiction locations including the significant cities of Albany and Buffalo and natural landmarks like Niagara Falls, along with fictional locations like North Hampton and the O'Neil Farm in the 2012 TV series.
