Some TMNT stuff was always meant for grownups.

Teleportation technology in the form of the transmat is already being used in the early issues of the Mirage continuity, especially in connection with technologically advanced extraterrestrial species. Of all those involved, the Utroms and Dale Evans McGillicutty are the only ones whose technology works reliably. On other occasions—such as with Professor Honeycutt of the Human Federation or Leatherhead—this technology usually does not go beyond the planning or experimental stage.
