This Mortal Shell is a backup story published in Tales of the TMNT volume 2 issue 53: Alien Invaders. It is specifically non-canon to the Mirage TMNT continuity, having been created as a collaboration of four students from the Center for Cartoon Studies.

This non-canon story also assumes non-canon details:
- Donatello describes he and his brothers as crime fighters, but this has never really been accurate to the Mirage TMNT continuity. The Turtles occasionally intervene as good Samaritans or help bring down rogue elements of the Foot Clan, but they were always just as keen to remain as invisible as possible, and did not make crime-fighting a regular way of life. Even after the Utroms made public official first contact with Earth in volume 4, the Turtles started living public lives but were just as careful to keep their (non-alien) mutant nature and their sewer lair a secret, trying not to draw more attention to themselves than the various aliens who had moved to Earth.
- Donatello states that, besides he and his brothers, the only other mutant was Splinter. But this is incorrect—Leatherhead was mutated with the same kind of mutagen, and still lives in the sewers.
