Summary[]

New York City, 1985. Passengers on a subway train are startled when a creature runs past their feet. They think it’s a rat, but just beneath a seat, a small fissure can be seen – a gate to The Upside Down.

In the city above, the kids from Hawkins are with their tour group. Mr. Clarke, their science teacher, tells them all to keep close and use the buddy system at all times. He also tells them that in the big city, there’s something to see no matter where they look. Dustin pauses to look into an open manhole, finding the sewer system to be fascinating, to Max’s disgust. Lucas calls their attention to the Empire State Building, but Mike is looking in another direction. He’s keeping watch for Eleven, who told them she could make her own way to the city.

While they wait, Dustin grabs a slice of pizza from Original Rupert's Pizza, even though it’s eight in the morning. Eleven finally shows up, explaining that she took a bus. It’s then that Dustin realizes they’ve gotten separated from the rest of their party. They race down to a subway platform but their train is already on its way. Though Lucas is worried that Mr. Clarke is going to be mad, Mike says he won’t be if they catch the next train.

As they wait for the train, they hear noises from the tunnel which sound like Demodogs. Eleven uses her powers to cause a ticket machine to spit out tickets as a diversion, and the kids enter the tunnel. Staying close together, they follow the sounds and quickly encounter creatures that look like Demodogs, but have robotic parts.

Before Eleven can use her powers to stop them, the Ninja Turtles arrive and begin smashing the beasts. After stabbing the last one, Leonardo looks over at the wide-eyed kids and tells them not to be scared. Raphael tells his brothers that they’re kids with Mousers at their heels, so of course they’re scared, but Leo says that he meant not to be scared of them.

As the Turtles discover that they aren’t the Mousers they are most familiar with, a group of actual Demodogs come running. The Turtles prepare for their attack, but the creatures suddenly fly into the air and smash into each other. Michelangelo looks over to see Eleven standing in front of the group with her hands up and notes that they don’t seem scared.

Cut to the Turtles’ lair. The kids share their story and Leo expresses his concern about their underground abode being inhabited by their monsters. Mike counters by saying that their field trip was going great before the Turtles’ crazy mice showed up.

Just then, Splinter steps into the room to tell them they should all focus on what they share in common. The kids are startled, finding him weird even by their standards. The Turtles introduce him and then Raph says that his father is right, what they actually have in common is the Demo-whatevers running around the subway. Mike tells him they are Demogorgons and Will explains to Michelangelo that the Demogorgons come from the Upside Down but they can cross over. Mike then adds that they’re hunters – predators – and the ones they saw in the subway, the Demodogs, are still growing.

Mike then expresses a concern that the Demodogs followed them, but Lucas is skeptical. He says it’s not a short distance, but Mike is sure it’s not a coincidence that the six of them are in the city and so are the creatures. Then Will calls out that the Demogorgons didn’t follow them because they didn’t have to – the Upside Down doesn’t switch on and off. It doesn’t matter how far they go, it’s there and there’s not escaping what’s always there. Mike takes a seat on the couch next to Will and assures his friend that they will always be there too. Leo adds that this time they have help.

Raph says that NYC is their hometown and they give a lot to it, but that some people suck. A very thoughtful Don agrees that he has a point when it comes to at least one person: Baxter Stockman. He is looking at the remains of a Demomouser and says that their one lead is that the hybrids draw inspiration from the Demogorgons, but that programming is one-hundred percent Stockman. However, he’s supposed to be in prison. The kids think he could have broken out, if he’s as smart as Don says.

A very determined Eleven says that she can find him. She sits on the couch and Raph brings her a red bandana. He tells her she can borrow it, but she hasn’t earned it. The Turtles spent years honing their bodies and minds into their best weapons. Everything wasn’t handed to them, like her powers. Don asks how this psychic projection works and Mike says she goes somewhere in her mind. If she knows what someone looks like, she can see them in there.

Eleven goes into her mind, walking in darkness until a piece of paper floats to her feet. She picks it up and then hears a scratching sound behind her. Turning, she sees Stockman at a desk, scribbling away on reams of paper, with a Demomouser standing nearby.

With a gasp, Eleven snaps out of it. She tells the waiting group that Stockman is not in prison. Splinter says that the answer leads to more questions. He asks Eleven if there was anything else she was able to gather. She tells him that Stockman knows her…or at least knows that she is coming. A panel shows a piece of paper from her vision and it has an address written on it. Eleven says that he wants her to find him.

Leonardo states that they will split up into two teams; one to find Stockman and the other to hunt down the Demogorgons and Mousers. This is when Dustin officially dubs them “Demomousers”. Raph announces that he’s going after Stockman and Eleven says she’s going with him. Mike is not thrilled with this, but they pay no attention. Don then says he’ll provide tech support and then points at Dustin and Max, saying that since they are the brains, they’re coming with Raph’s team. Leo takes Mikey, Mike, Lucas and Will, saying they will go into the subways and buy time until the other team finds answers. Raph wants to know how they’ll stay in contact and Dustin pulls walkie-talkies from his backpack.

As they head out, Splinter offers words of wisdom. They must remember that they share the burden before them. They do not have their usual friends beside them and though their alliance has been brief, trust is the only path to take now. The two groups separate, with Leo’s group going into the subway tunnels and Raph’s group climbing a ladder up the side of the building at the address Eleven saw in her vision. They reach the roof and as Raph helps Dustin up, he tells them to stay quiet because they need the element of surprise on their side. Eleven says it’s too late. The group turns to see Stockman and more than a dozen men, armed with stun batons, waiting. Stockman tells Eleven that he’s glad she received his message and that though she’s not alone, he can manage. He says that her Papa told him so much about her and he can’t wait to see how much of it is true. The two Turtles and Eleven start battling the armed men as Stockman waits.
