Synopsis[]
Shadow is quick to come to her uncle Raphael's rescue as her katana lops off the opticarn's head, and the creature's corpse spills out consumed souls that quickly distract the rest of the flock. Eventually the group's flight takes them to Nocturna, the city of perpetual night, and home to Sloane and Lucrezia. Before heading to Lilith's Den, they stop at a bodega of the supernatural to choose from exotic convenience store snacks. Sloane buys cigarettes and makes a mysterious call on her cell phone as she waits outside. Robbers break into the bodega as the others are still inside, but the combined efforts of Raph, Shadow and Lulu make short work of them, prompting the grateful clerk to let his saviors have whatever they want, free of charge. The three meet back up with Sloane and are guided through a sewer manhole, down a tunnel, into an elevator and up to the luxurious penthouse skyscraper which serves as den for Lilith and her Sisterhood. Sloane fixes Lulu and a pickled basilisk jowl sandwich in the kitchen as Raph and Shadow try and fail to find any clues whatsoever inside the spacious dwelling. A skeptical Raph fails to extract any more clues from Sloane's story, and questions about Lulu's parents reveal that Lilith and the father don't seem to have ever been in love. With still no leads, Raph asks to see the den's rooftop, and quickly tells Sloane to keep Lulu below to prevent her from seeing the a severed and impaled head of Clea, the den's beloved ordinary wolf pet, along with signs of a battle the werewolf sisterhood clearly lost. Raph also finds the enormous feather of a giant barn owl, immediately transforming the investigation into one of no clues to one of many strange clues. Back inside, as Sloane consoles Lulu over the death of their pet and Raph and Shadow discuss how to proceed with the investigation, the entire penthouse experiences a massive jolt that shatters all the windows. They look outside in terror as a giant barn owl has literally ripped the entire penthouse structure from the top of its building, carrying it away through the sky with the group trapped inside.
