The Mind Flayer is a mysterious entity, made up entirely of silver-black particles. It originated from an unknown alternate dimension. This entity has many names, including the Shadow Monster, the particles, and the Mind Flayer. The entity is gigantic, looming at least fifty stories tall and sports a distinctive spider-like appearance. The Mind Flayer exercises supreme control of the Upside Down via a psychic link, with Demogorgons, vines, and Demobats forming a shared hive mind. For a period in 1985, possessed humans known as "the Flayed" also comprised part of the hive mind.
Debuting at the end of "In the Mind's Eye", the Mind Flayer is shown perched at the top of a skyscraper in New York City.
