This is a transcript for The Entity Below, the sixteenth episode of season three of TMNT (2003 series).
VOICE-OVER INTRO | |
High Mage | For thousands of years, we have awaited this day: the complete planetary alignment of our solar system. And with these celestial events, the spark of power within the long dormant crystals has been renewed. There are those who fear this alignment will provoke untold disasters upon the Earth. Yet it is not the planetary alignment the humans race should fear; it is what the alignment has awakened. |
{Opening sequence; title song}
The episode begins inside the turtles’ lair. As Donatello speaks, the solar system is displayed, showing all of the planets, along with the Moon and Sun, lining up.
Donatello | It’s really quite simple to understand. The longitudinal span of the other eight planets, the Moon, and the Sun, collimate within a geocentric sector of fourteen degrees to form a grand planetary alignment with Earth. [The scene shifts to a grapefruit sitting on a table.] Say this grapefruit is the sun, right? [Behind the grapefruit are a line of donuts.] And the Earth is the third donut from the-- [There is nothing but crumbs in the third spot.] Hey, what happened to Earth?. |
There is a chomping sound coming from Michelangelo, whose mouth is full.
Michelangelo | What? |
Raphael | Shell for brains. |
Leonardo | But, Don, none of this should have an effect on the Earth, right? |
Donatello | Yeah. Astronomically speaking, the planets are just too far apart to exhibit any additional gravitational pull. |
The ground starts to shake and there is a rumbling noise.
All | Whoa! |
Michelangelo | And that was just a random earthquake, right? [It shakes again, throwing the turtles to the floor.] Right? |
Leonardo | Maybe there’s something in the news about it. |
He grabs the remote and turns on the televisions. Channel 4 Breaking News has an image of a seismograph.
Male Reporter | A live feed from the university’s seismograph rating it at 7.8 on the Richter Scale. [Another screen displays a target of the epicenter.] Closest estimates put the epicenter a thousand miles south of Greenland. [Still another TV has images of the sea level.] Scientists believe that with the current shifting of tectonic plates, we may be witnessing the birth of a new island or even a subcontinent. [The reporter appears, standing in a flooded street.] With the displacement of water so massive, it’s dangerously raising the sea level. Unstable temperatures have prompted violent thunderstorms, due to reach the eastern seaboard within the hour. |
Donatello | It doesn’t make any sense. There must be something else at work here. |
The ground shakes again.
Michelangelo | I told you we should have listened to that guy carrying the “end is near” sign. |
Male Reporter | ...including power outages— |
Suddenly the power goes out.
Michelangelo | No way! |
Raphael | Oh, great. |
Leonardo | Think the whole city is out? |
Something starts glowing nearby.
Donatello | Huh? Hey guys, check it out. [He leads the way to his lab area. The crystal sitting on his desk is glowing.] Impossible. This crystal was completely burnt out. |
Leonardo | It’s not now. |
Donatello | It seems to be supercharged. |
Raphael | How? |
Donatello | I don’t know. It might have something to do with the alignment, or... |
They turn at the sound of chomping and see Michelangelo is eating another donut.
Michelangelo | What? It’s Pluto. Who cares about Pluto? |
Donatello | Or it might have something to do with the Crystal Moon and the underground city. |
The ground shakes hard. Donatello and Leonardo speak at the same time.
Both | We’d better check it out. |
Cut to the garage. The lights come on to display the Turtle Tunneler.
Michelangelo | And remember, Donny, you promised I could drive. |
Donatello | All right. Just try not to grind the gears. |
Michelangelo starts the engine and pulls out of the garage, the gears grinding. His brothers turn around to snarl at him.
Michelangelo | Sorry. |
Donatello | Okay, I’d suggest everyone strap in. We’ve dug out these tunnels already, remember? |
The Tunneler turns from the sewers into a previously drilled opening in the wall. They immediately plummet down a steep drop. Everyone laughs at the bumpy ride. They drive down the hill and through another tunnel, then jump a chasm, moving fast.
Donatello | Hit the brakes! Hit the brakes! |
The Tunneler moves through another tunnel, onto a ledge and before Michelangelo can stop, they fall into a pool of lava. Everyone shouts as the Tunneler bobs up and drives out of the lava to solid ground. The Tunneler comes to a stop and the turtles exit.
Leonardo | Um, what’s wrong with this picture? |
All | Whoa! |
The underground city, once abandoned, is now alive with activity. The Crystal Moon is in place on the ceiling and is glowing.
Raphael | This sure ain’t the way we left it. |
Michelangelo | Yeah. This joint is jumping. |
Leonardo | It’s as if the entire city has somehow come back to life, and do you hear that? [There is the faint sound of chanting.] Some kind of chanting. |
Shift to a chamber in the city, where a group of mages focus the energy of the Crystal Moon on a section of the Earth. They chant “Rise, Y’Lyntias, Rise” over and over again. The High Mage breaks off from the group to peer into an oval shaped crystal, which shows him the turtles.
High Mage | So they have returned. |
He steps out to a raised walkway and looks down to where the turtles are standing. They are unaware of him.
Raphael | You think there’s a connection between what’s happening down here and what’s going on up top? |
Leonardo | Let’s find out. |
The High Mage draws four glowing red crystals from his cloak and throws them onto the ground near the lava pool. Lava is pulled into the gems. Meanwhile, the turtles are traveling through the city, attempting to find someone who will speak to them.
Donatello | Uh, excuse me. Could you please tell us-- [The Y’Lyntian on the flying scooter zips past them.] Hey! |
Raphael | It’s like they don’t even see us. |
Leonardo | They see us, they just don’t care. |
Michelangelo | Ah! [The wall in front of them begins to melt and two giant lava monsters step out.] Well, it looks like somebody cares! |
They turn to find two more lava monsters rising from the ground. Surrounded, the turtles stand shell-to-shell.
Leonardo | What are these things? |
Michelangelo | I don’t know, but from the looks of them, I’d say they’re not the welcome wagon. |
Donatello | Any suggestions? |
Raphael | Yeah! Let’s kick the magma out of ‘em. |
The turtles race towards the lava monsters and then dive down between their legs to come out behind them. Rather than turning, the monsters turn inside out and attack. Michelangelo leaps around to avoid being hit.
Michelangelo | Good plan, Raph. Except, how do we fight monsters made out of lava? |
Raphael runs along a ledge towards a monster.
Raphael | Like this! Hiyah, hiyah! [He throws both his sai at the monster. It throws a lava ball at the sai, almost hitting Raphael in the process. His sai are melted.] That thing slagged my blade! |
He growls and storms towards the monster, who continues to throw lava balls. The other turtles grab Raphael to stop him.
Leonardo | Wait! Guys, we’re not winning this one. |
Michelangelo | So let’s try a new plan, one I like to call running for our lives! |
They run around a corner, but are cut off when the lava monsters melt their way through a wall.
Raphael | Now what? |
Michelangelo | Uh, more running? |
They turn and run as the lava monsters throw lava balls at them. Suddenly the turtles come to a quick stop. Blocking their way are dozens of the city’s inhabitants. The Y’Lyntians say nothing, but march towards them. The turtles turn to run down a side street.
Donatello | Since when did we become so popular? |
They come to a sliding stop again as the monsters once more appear.
All | Huh? |
Raphael | We’re boxed in! |
Suddenly the ground under their feet opens up and they are dropped into dungeon-like cell. They land on their feet.
Leonardo | There’s a door. |
They nearly make it to the door when energy beams stretch across the opening to block them.
Donatello | Yeah, a cell door. |
Michelangelo | Not good. Not good at all. |
Leonardo | Let’s make it good! [He pulls his katana and strikes the beams, but is severely shocked in the process.] Ah! |
The shock knocks him down.
Raphael | Leo! |
Donatello | Leo! |
Raphael and Donatello kneel down to turn Leonardo over and check for injuries.
Michelangelo | And this is why I have to ask, why do we keep coming back down here? |
A door opens just on the other side of their cell door and the High Mage steps through.
High Mage | I have asked myself that very same question. |
Michelangelo | Oh, not this guy again. |
High Mage | You should not have returned. |
Michelangelo | That’s exactly what I told them, but would they listen? No~o! |
Donatello | We wouldn’t have come back down here, but whatever is powering the crystals is wreaking havoc on our world. |
Raphael | I don’t know what you’re up to, buddy, but you better knock it off or-- |
Suddenly long crystal shards shoot up from the ground, surround Raphael, and lift him up against the energy beams. He receives a nasty shock.
Raphael | Ahhh! |
Michelangelo | Raph! No! |
Leonardo | Let him go! |
High Mage | Or you will what? [Raphael slumps over. The crystal shards retract.] Pathetic creatures. [Leonardo goes to Raphael and helps him sit up.] This is far beyond your control. After ten thousand years, a new day is dawning for my people. The Y’Lyntians shall rule once more. |
Leonardo | Your people? You told us you were the sole survivor of your kind, that you were peace-loving. Why all the lies? |
High Mage | At the time I had limited power. I needed your help to maintain my city, so I said what I had to. |
Donatello | I don’t understand. What is it you Y’Lyntians are trying to do? |
High Mage | Reshape the world the way it used to be. |
He turns to walk away. | |
Leonardo | We won’t stand by and let this happen. |
High Mage | It is already happening. There is nothing you can do. You shall be the first slaves of the New World Order. |
After he has gone, the turtles look for an escape route. Raphael uses a wooden stake to try and break through the wall.
Raphael | This is gonna take a month. |
His brothers stand on each other’s shoulders as they try to reach the opening they fell through.
Donatello | No good. It’s too far up. |
The wall in front of them starts to melt.
Michelangelo | Now what? More lava monsters? |
They hop down and back away from the wall, taking up defensive postures. The wall explodes inwards and an Y’Lyntian woman stands at the new opening. In her hands she holds a large oval crystal.
Versallia | Come with me if you want to live. |
Michelangelo | I wanna live, how about you guys? You wanna live? |
Raphael | Anything’s better than sitting locked up in here. |
Leonardo | All right, let’s go. But be ready for anything. [They leave the cell and follow Versallia.] So who are you and why are you helping us? |
Raphael | Yeah. Aren’t you one of them? |
Versallia | All will be revealed. Follow me. [They continue down a long series of corridors.] My name is Versallia. I am an Y’Lyntian, but I am not like the others. We must stop them. |
She stops at an entry door and holds up her crystal.
Leonardo | Stop them? We don’t even know how they’re doing what they’re doing. |
The door opens and Versallia leads them into a chamber.
Versallia | Then you will learn. Here in the Chamber of Chronicles you will see the truth of the past. |
They stop before a giant crystal shaped screen embedded in the wall.
Michelangelo | I don’t know. The last movie we saw down here turned out to be a pack of lies. |
On the screen, events from the Y’Lyntians past begins to play.
Versallia | Please, attend. We were of a different age, a time long ago when Y’Lyntians held unassailable dominion over the Earth. [Y’Lyntians walk around their island.] We were the first, the chosen. [The Y’Lyntians all look up and crystals begin to fall from the sky.] The heavens bestowed upon us power beyond imaging in the form of mighty crystals from the stars. The largest of these, the Sun Crystal, came to rest high upon Mount Timeas overlooking the entire continent. As a final gift from the heavens, the planets aligned and empowered our Sun Crystal, charging it with unbelievable energy. Crystal energy which we harnessed... to build the largest, most splendid civilization on Earth. |
Advanced flying crafts float above the city. Y’Lyntians create artwork; paintings.
Versallia | But we Y’Lyntians had advanced so far, so fast we began to believe ourselves superior to all others. We enslaved many innocent humans, and when they could not perform the jobs we imposed upon them the limitless power of our Crystal Sun was used to mutate them into creatures better suited to serve our selfish needs. [The Mages focus the power of the Crystal Sun onto a human and transform him into a water creature.] Water breathers to bring us the bounty of the sea. Monstrous beasts of burdens to raise our monuments and dig our canals. And Avians to patrol the skies preventing certain Y’Lyntians from escaping. [The Avians dive down to snatch Y’Lyntians out of a rowboat.] Y’Lyntians who, like me, detested the dark ways of our own people. And then, an uprising. |
Sailing ships approach the island, prepared for war.
Versallia | The human cultures banded together and launched an attack upon our home. [The ships catapults fling large boulders at the buildings.] The Y’Lyntians were taken by surprise. The High Council gathered in the Star-Chamber to take retaliatory action and the slaves were ordered to turn the power of our crystal sun into the most devastating of weapons. [Slaves turn a wheel, which lifts a smaller crystal into alignment with the Crystal Sun. An energy beam shoots into the smaller crystal and is then shot into a ship, cutting it in half. The slaves continue to turn the beam onto other ships, destroying them.] But many slaves were allied with the human forces, determined to put an end to their cruel Y’Lyntian taskmasters. [Water breathers come up out of a pool and attack the Mages.] The power of our Crystal Sun was turned back upon itself with catastrophic consequences, [The Crystal Sun explodes.] and the fabled island of Y’Lyntias sank beneath the waves. |
Michelangelo | Wait a minute. The fabled island of Y’Lyntias? You mean Y’Lyntias is really... |
Donatello | Atlantis. Of course. Why didn’t I get it before? You guys are from the lost city of Atlantis. Unbelievable. |
Versallia | Yes. We may be all that remains of the once great civilization. A few of us managed to escape destruction and took a fragment of the Sun Crystal. Though its power was hugely diminished, it was enough to give life to a vast underground refuge. Now named the Crystal Moon, this smaller power source ultimately began to weaken. And without slaves, the Y’Lyntians found they were ill-equipped to survive on their own. So they chose to go into crystal suspension until the next planetary alignment could recharge the moon crystal. Only one remained awake, the High Mage. It was his task to watch over the city until the Crystal Moon could be recharged. And now all has been fulfilled as foreseen by the High Council. The alignment has come to pass. The Crystal Moon is recharged, and the High Council are using it to raise our ancient city from the sea. |
Donatello | And, with the sudden geologic change on such a massive scale, continents will shift and sink. Most of the human race will be wiped out. It’ll be the end of the world as we know it. |
Raphael | Then we gotta stop ‘em. |
Leonardo | Maybe we can take a page from Y’Lyntian history and sabotage the crystal power source just like the slaves did. |
Raphael | Sounds like a plan. Let’s do it. |
Versallia | I can get a prism large enough to interfere with the energy beam, but we will have to gain access to the Star Chamber. It will not be easy. |
She takes them into another chamber, this one filled with armor and weapons.
Michelangelo | Especially if more of those lava monsters are around. |
Versallia | This Y’Lyntian armor will protect you from the lava wraiths. If you dislodge the fire crystals from within their bodies using these staffs, the lava monsters will disintegrate. |
Raphael | Good. It’s time for a little payback. Those goons melted my sai. |
Leonardo | Suit up, boys. |
The chanting continues in the Star Chamber. Nearby, the lava monsters stand watch. The chanting focuses the crystal power source, and the peaks of Y’Lyntias start to rise above the water. Below, an elevator opens to reveal the turtles, now completely dressed in armor and carrying staffs tipped on both ends by crystals.
Michelangelo | Time to party. |
They enter a corridor and peer into another. Versallia approaches Leonardo.
Versallia | Here. This will enable you to disrupt the crystal energy flow. |
Leonardo | Right, thanks. [Versallia leaves.] Okay. We all clear on the plan? [His brothers nod.] Be careful. |
He begins climbing up the wall.
Michelangelo | Alrighty then. Turtle Armor Force, move out! |
Leonardo climbs over a ledge to drop onto the rooftop just below the Star Chamber tower. He looks up at the tower opening overhead.
Leonardo | Hmm, so far so... [A lava monster suddenly pops out in front of him and he leaps back.] Bad! |
He jumps again when the monster tries to grab him. Leonardo then pulls out his staff and spins it overhead.
Leonardo | Okay, now where’s that crystal heart of yours? |
He charges forward to take a slice from the lava monster’s side. It retaliates by striking him and sending Leonardo flying backwards. He manages to flip over one handed and lands safely on the roof’s ledge. Smoke streams from the spot on his armor that was touched by lava and it clears to show an indentation in the armor.
Leonardo | At least we know the armor works. Now let’s give the staff another try. |
The monster throws a lava ball at Leonardo, who flips over it and then leaps at the monster. He comes down with the staff landing on the monster’s head and slicing through its lava body. The body falls in half away from the fire crystal. The lava pools on the rooftop.
Leonardo | Wow, Y’Lyntian battle armor, don’t storm the Star Chamber without it. |
Return to the other three turtles as they traverse a corridor.
Michelangelo | Hey, Raph! |
Raphael | What? |
Michelangelo | Does my butt look big in this outfit? |
Raphael | Mikey.... |
A lava monster rises up from the floor behind them. They enter a small area where several corridors intersect and stop as a lava monster rises up in front of them. They turn to see another coming up from the floor and look behind them to see the third lava monster. A lava ball hits Donatello in the face and knocks him back, but he rolls and over in time to bat away another lava ball. Each of the turtles faces off with a lava monster. Donatello manages to slash his opponent in half, and then throws his staff to pin the fire crystal, destroying the lava monster.
Donatello | Hey guys, it works! Aim for their crystal heart! |
A lava monster grabs Michelangelo and slams him against the wall.
Michelangelo | Easier said... [He’s slammed to the floor.] than done! [He slides between the monsters legs and it turns itself inside out to face him.] Gross! |
He slices through its legs and when it falls, he stabs the fire crystal with his staff. The monster melts.
Michelangelo | Aw, did I break your heart? |
Raphael battles his lava monster, slicing through it once but it grabs him. He holds his staff up at the monsters face and it chomps down on the middle of the staff, causing it to split in half. Raphael growls and spins the halves before using them to slice the monster’s head off.
Raphael | Okay. Now let’s find that crystal of yours. |
The lava monster picks up its head and grows another one before the original head turns into a lava ball. It throws the lava ball at Raphael, who bats it back.
Raphael | Right back at you. |
He throws one of the staff halves into the lava monsters middle and catches the fire crystal, which pulls it out of the monster. It disintegrates into a puddle.
Michelangelo | Um, clean up on aisle twelve. |
Raphael | Shut up. |
Donatello | Come on. |
The chanting continues. In a line with the other mages, the power coming through the High Mage’s eyes and mouth disappears and he touches the crystal hanging on a cord around his neck.
High Mage | Our sentries have failed. Maintain your focus. The island must continue to rise. I will deal with the intruders. |
He walks towards a door but when it slides open, he comes face to face with Donatello and Raphael, who cross their staffs together to block his way. Michelangelo hangs upside down in front of him.
Michelangelo | Roll out the welcome mat and break out the bone china, you’ve got company. |
High Mage | You dare desecrate the Star Chamber? [He grabs his crystal and electricity surrounds the three turtles.] Fools! You are no match for my power. |
The electrical energy lifts the turtles into the air.
Donatello | We know. That’s why we’re not here to fight you. |
Michelangelo | Yeah. We’re here to distract you. |
Standing high above them on the opening to the Star Chamber is Leonardo.
Leonardo | Your crazy ritual is wreaking havoc across the globe, [He holds up the large prism.] but it stops now. |
High Mage | No! |
He reaches upward and the electricity holding the other three turtles breaks. They fall and Leonardo jumps onto the giant crystal.
Leonardo | Yes! |
He slams the prism down on the crystal and cracks it. Beams of pure power pour out in several directions, cutting through walls and shocking all of the mages. Versallia appears above them on a crystal powered flying scooter.
Versallia | You have done it, but come! [Leonardo hops on behind her.] We must flee the city. |
She brings the scooter down to the ground and the other three climb on. The Star Chamber explodes behind them as Versallia flies out of the city. All of the structures begin to collapse into the lava and beams hit the Crystal Moon, causing it to also fall into the lava. As soon as it does, the crystal on the scooter loses its power and it starts to fall.
Donatello | We’ve lost all power. Jump! |
They all leap from the scooter, landing on a cliff ledge that juts out over the lava. Leonardo has an arm around Versallia and just catches the lip of the ledge so that they are both dangling over the lava.
Raphael | Grab my hand! |
Versallia reaches up and Raphael catches hold of her. The tallest part of the city collapses and the last to disappear into the lava is the Star Chamber. Leonardo and Versallia kneel on the ledge with the other turtles standing behind them. They have removed their helmets.
Leonardo | Close call, but we did it. |
He places a hand on Versallia’s shoulder.
Versallia | The world is safe, but... but I’ve lost everything I’ve ever known. |
She starts to cry and Leonardo comforts her. Cut to the group walking through tunnels. The turtles have ditched their Y’Lyntian armor.
Leonardo | Where will you go, Versallia? |
Versallia | I have heard long ago of other underground cities where Y’Lyntians like myself fled the dark empire. I hope to find them. |
Donatello | Well, if you ever get topside, look us up. |
Versallia | Farewell my friends. Safe journey. |
She turns and walks off into the darkness.
Leonardo | Come on, let’s get the Tunneler and get out of here. |
They walk through a long tunnel.
Raphael | And Mikey, you are not driving. |
Michelangelo | Letting me drive is the least you could do for dragging me back down here to creepy cavern. |
Raphael | Ah, suck it up, Mikey. |
Leonardo | And look at the bright side, we’ll never have to come back down here ever again. |
Michelangelo | Yeah. That’s what you said the last time, and the time before that, and the time before that, and the time before that, and the time before that. [Sound of a slap.] Ow! |
{Roll end credits}
