Tegaki, (手鉤 lit. "hand hooks"), were a kind of kakushi buki (隠し武器; lit. "hidden weapon") deployed by the ninja of Japan.
Tegaki are claws use to climb up sheer wall surfaces such as brick, stone, concrete, and wood. They first appeared in the first Turtles comic. They're sturdy and strong, but are not designed to hold up as weapons.
Appearances[]
- They appeared in the Mirage comics issues #1 and #9.
- In the 2003 series episode A Better Mousetrap, the Turtles use tegaki to pursue a Mouser up a vertical surface. In The Christmas Aliens, Michelangelo uses them to cling to a truck.
- In the 2012 series, in the season 1 episode, "Rise of the Turtles, Part 2", it's shown that like the rest of the Turtles arsenal, they are fabricated and maintained by Donatello. All four Turtles are seen using these (also known simply as "Shuko") to scale the wall of the Kraang compound. When Donatello slaps his own forehead at Michelangelo's lack of understanding of Leonardo's plan, he forgets that he's wearing a pair of Shuko and hurts himself. And later, during their first clash with Snakeweed, Raphael uses his on Snakeweed, only to have them prove to be useless. In the season 3 episode "Vision Quest", Raphael forges his own pair of Tegaki to use as his primary weapon, (although these ones look more like a pair of Tekkō-kagi but with only two blades).
- In the IDW miniseries Secret History of the Foot Clan, the Turtles and Splinter use tegaki to scale the exterior of a Foot Clan building.
- In Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Donatello attempts to use tegaki to climb the Nakamura Corporation building "The Purple Jacket", but fails.
