Story So Far[]
A little over half a year ago, Old Hob unleashed a mutagen bomb, which transformed a portion of NYC. The exact range and effects of the mutagen bomb are unknown and more may be affected than anyone realizes…
Summary[]
A young mutant salamander walks along a dark and empty sidewalk in Mutant Town. He passes an alley and then stops when a rustling sound startles him. This is followed by a trash can overturning. He calls out, wanting to know who is there and thinking that it’s someone named Billy pulling a prank. Then he sees something red glowing from a passage between buildings and goes to investigate, demanding to know if what he sees is following him. Something suddenly rises up behind him and grabs the salamander, dragging him into the dark. As he vanishes, a M.O.U.S.E.R. steps out of the areaway.
Cut to the Splinter Dōjō. Donatello writes in his journal, reporting that Michelangelo is coming around to his old self and it’s done him good to be surrounded by friends. Mikey is seen rolling around on the ground with the weasels. Don then reports that teaching is a good role for Leonardo as he gets to use some of his hard-won leadership skills. Leo is shown leading a group of young mutants as they train in martial arts, though it’s not without its challenges. Raphael sits on a rooftop with Pepperoni by his side and Don writes that he is still adjusting.
The entire group is then shown in Alopex's shelter, seated around the picnic tables. Don then writes that he is keeping busy finding ways to be useful. He is shown repairing a bicycle for a young mutant, fixing the sink for an elderly one, and reading to mutant children from the novel he’s writing.
Suddenly a mutant rabbit named Laurel bursts into the dojo and begs for Leonardo’s help. He asks what is wrong and she tells the group that her son Felix is missing. He was playing outside and she only looked away for a minute. She hands over a picture of her son, who is a mutant bear. Jennika comforts the distraught mom, and Leo promises that they’ll do whatever they can do help. Don says they can make some flyers to put up around the neighborhood. Mikey offers Laurel some tissues and tells her that once he lost Klunk but he turned up just fine and he’s sure that Felix will too. Then Raph rages that if anyone laid a hand on him, they’ll find them and beat their…. Jennika stops him before he can finish the sentence in front of the kids. Leo says that they’ll look for him while they’re out on patrol.
Laurel leaves and Leo shoos the kids back to class, but Lita doesn’t move. In a low voice, she says that The Slithery got him. Leo comes back to her and asks what she said and she repeats in a louder voice that it was The Slithery. Lita tells him that The Slithery is a sea monster that comes up through the sewers to snatch little kids. She says he slithers along the ground leaving a trail of slime because he has no legs. He steals kids and takes them down to his secret lair. According to Lita, he keeps the children in cages and no one really knows why he takes them, but she thinks he eats them.
A young mutant walrus suddenly calls out that she’s telling a baby story meant to scare little babies like her and that’s it’s not real. She turns and yells back that it is and they start to argue, nearly coming to blows until Leo breaks them up. He kneels and tells Lita that it does sound like a tall tale, like the boogey man, and that Felix probably just wandered off. They both return to the class and Leo begins leading them again, coaching them on their forms. Lita suddenly punches the child next to her and Leo quickly scolds her to forget monster stories and pay attention. Lita tears up and then runs from the room and Leo curses. He chases after her but she runs out of the building. Arms folded, Jennika demands to know what happened and Leo admits he screwed up and lost his temper. He asks what he should do and Jenny says to go after her and apologize. She hands him a stack of flyers about the missing Felix and instructs him to take them with him while he’s out. As he wanders through the streets, Leo calls out for Lita. He then suddenly notices that there are a lot of missing children posters plastered up on walls and posts in the area.
Shift to Mayor Baxter Stockman as he gives a speech addressing citizen concerns about the people affected by the mutagenic agent. Standing behind him is April O'Neil. Stockman says that until they completely understand its effects, the people in that area must remain contained for the health and safety of all New Yorkers. He assures everyone that the needs of the mutants are being met and they are receiving regular aid in the form of food and other supplies. He promises that the mutant crisis is a top priority and he’s putting his own scientific and technological resources towards solving the problem. In the background, April sneers and murmurs to herself as she wonders what he’s actually up to, referring to him as a liar. Stockman then says that no matter the outcome, the brave mutants can be proud to have made a contribution to scientific knowledge and advancement.
In the Splinter dōjō kitchen, three of the Turtles are seated at the table while Raph works on pipes under the sink. Leo wonders if he’s cut out for teaching. The kids are undisciplined and it’s like he’s herding cats. Their father used to say that training is everything but how does he train the ones who won’t listen, or just want to it each other. Jenny says he could just not show up, like Raph, who of course hears her. He stands up and asks what about Donny, who demands to know what he means. Raph says that story time is not part of a self-defense class, but Don says he's teaching the kids to think creatively. Leo wonders how their father had the patience to put up with them at that age. Jenny tells him to relax and he’ll figure it out. Raph laughs that Leo’s been uptight for two lifetimes. Then Jenny says she doesn’t have all the answers, but Leo could start by loosening up a little. Just then Mikey enters with the three weasels hanging all over him, and Jenny says maybe not that loose.
Later, the Turtles have geared up and are ready to head out. Raph looks over at Alopex and asks if she’s okay on weasel watch for a while. She is wrestling with them as she tries to get them under control and tells Raph to go on. Mona Lisa peeks in and asks Alopex if she needs help babysitting, which Alopex quickly accepts.
As the Turtles begin their patrol, Leo asks Jenny if she saw Lita come back. Jenny says no, but she isn’t worried yet, that Lita was taking care of herself for a long time before they came along. She says Lita is probably in one of her hideouts and will eventually forgive him. The pass a light post covered in missing children posters and Leo squeezes his eyes shut as he replies that he’s sure Jenny must be right.
Meanwhile, in a trash strewn alley, Lita is curled up inside a cardboard box. The flashing red light of a M.O.U.S.E.R. draws her attention and she crawls out to ask who it is. Suddenly, Lita is grabbed from behind and whisked away by a large, slithering mutated moray eel – The Slithery!
