Tanuki (狸) are the Japanese name for a wild raccoon-like canid known as the Japanese raccoon dog. In Japanese mythology, they are capable of various magics, and can be seen as tricksters. Their most known skill is to transform into other beings using leaves.
2012 TV series[]
A band of tanuki attack the Ninja Turtles, Usagi, and Kintaro in "Osoroshi no Tabi", starting out by capturing and imitating Michelangelo, and later Raphael, who the tanuki have tied up over fires. The Turtles fight the tanuki and do ill in combat, and finally Usagi finally convinces them to satisfy the tanuki by offering them food.
The tanuki later return to rescue the team from Joroguma, distracting her and setting them free from her web. Usagi thanks the tanuki and invokes the gods to honor them.
