In an IDW alternate continuity, where the Turtles are brainwashed by the Shredder and Kitsune, Tang Shen makes a single appearance as a spirit.
Working together, Splinter and Old Hob devise a trap for the Turtles. Hob is captured and "leaks" the whereabouts of Splinter to them, and says he has to take them to him. Splinter puts up a good fight for show, but ultimately lets himself be taken in.
Back at Foot headquarters, Shredder prepares to execute Splinter, when suddenly a wall is blown open. Hob arrives with heavy artillery and Slash in tow. Splinter ends up battling Kitsune on the astral plane, while Arnold Jones and his Purple Dragons also show up to get revenge on Casey's death. Karai and Alopex betray Shredder and are killed by him. The Turtles fight Slash and Hob.
On the astral plane, Splinter battles Kitsune, who has shifted into her giant fox form. Catching Splinter in her jaws, she is about to finish him when Tang Shen's spirit appears, telling Kitsune to "Release my husband, foul witch." Her arrival startles and distracts Kitsune long enough for Splinter to twist in the fox's mouth and strike with his sword, killing Kitsune.
Angry about Kitsune's death, Shredder prepares to deliver a final blow to Splinter, when Jones kills Shredder with a shotgun blast to the face. As Splinter lay dying, he tells his recovered sons that he goes to be with their mother.
