Splinter is an animal-born mutant rat, and the adoptive father and sensei of the Ninja Turtles.

Physical appearance[]

Personality[]

History[]

Once a literal street rat, Splinter was living off what scraps he could find. Everyone, human and animal alike, hated him, except for a cockroach named Kevin. However, when a human stepped on Kevin and killed him, Splinter made haste in eating his friend's corpse.

Splinter's life would change forever one day when a canister of mutagen doused him and a quartet of baby turtles in the sewers, accelerating their evolution to anthropomorphic beings. Splinter raised these turtles as his own sons, and instructed them in the martial arts after watching Jackie Chan movies and internet tutorials.

One night after being worried about the whereabouts of his four sons, Splinter grounded them for coming home late from grocery shopping following a trip in Central Park watching Ferris Buller's Day Off. Even despite their punishment being lifted a month later, Splinter suspected their recent activities in the surface is not just for groceries.

After being felt lonely with his sons absent when his surprise party didn't go as planned, the turtles' human friend April O'Neil asks his aid to save them after being abducted by T.C.R.I. forces led by Cynthia Utrom. Realizing his milking-related fears came true, Splinter once again grounds the turtles for lying to him and befriending April, but decides to join with their mission to stop Superfly at his hideaway in Staten Island.

Encouraged by Superfly's words about how humans don't get along with mutants, Splinter snapped into retaliation and helps his sons pushing him into the seawater. Believing how "buck wild" he went to stop Superfly's conquest, his aid contributed to something worse; Superfly achieving a second mutation as a Kaiju-sized mutant dubbed "Superduperfly". Because of this mistake, Splinter changed his tune on his disdain on humans as he help inspired his fellow mutants, including his own sons to save New York City from destruction at the hands of Superduperfly.

Once believed to be revisiting a painful memory in Times Square, a bystander asked Splinter if he is alright due to his injuries he had as he realized his aid was due to April's live report on how mutants are saving New York. Under his request, he asked the citizens to deliver a anti-mutagen vial, created by T.C.R.I., to the turtles as their last ditch effort to stop Superduperfly. The teamwork of both humans and mutants helped stopped the destruction of New York City as the mutants were hailed as heroes.

Following his sons' victory, Splinter allows the turtles to attend high school as regular teenagers like they wanted, showing how proud he is to the quartet he raised their whole lives for. And with Superfly's mutant family now living with them in their sewer home, Splinter started a romantic relationship with Scumbug.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike his previous incarnations, this version of Splinter so far seems to have no connection to Hamato Yoshi (first being his 2014 incarnation) and had never encountered the Shredder in the past.
  • In August 2023, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem lead character designer Woodrow White stated in an Instagram post concerning Splinter's design that, "This [character design] took a lot of tries, but once I landed on slide 1, we were certain we had found our Splinter. Inspirations were Danny DeVito, Jeff Lebowski, my girlfriend’s dog, and Lester the Rat from Beakman's World (something about a rat in a stained white t-shirt feels appropriately disgusting)."[1]
  • Unlike his previous incarnations, this version of Splinter's accent is Chinese instead of Japanese.
  • In the Tales of the TMNT series, Splinter speaks in "Vermin" language, as opposed to fluent English in the film previously. Despite this, Raph's voice actor, Brady Noon, did also provide Splinter's voice in his normal English language.
