Rikers Island in 2105
Rikers Island is a major island in New York City's East River within the borders of the borough of the Bronx. Originally a much smaller island, it was quadrupled in size via landfill and became home to the city's primary jail facility, which is one of the largest prison complexes on Earth. As a legal quirk, it is not considered a prison under United States law, as it is only used for temporary criminal holding pending transfer and for convicts serving prison sentences of one year or less. As of 2019, Rikers Island's jails are preparing to close before 2027 in response to a decline in the city's crime rate, but are still in operation until then.
A futuristic Rikers Island is featured in the Fast Forward season of the 2003 TV series. In the episode Enter the Jammerhead, the prison is where Jammerhead is being held. Though he manages to escape thanks to his Street Phantoms, Jammerhead is later captured and returned to the prison.
In Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II, the Shredder is being held at Rikers Island following the events of the first miniseries.
