The pteranodon was a flying reptile which lived in the late Cretaceous period. They were similar to birds and bats, but were actually neither. Despite popular conception, and unlike actual birds, it is not classified as a dinosaur. Its most distinctive features are the upward-projecting crest on its head and a long toothless beak.
Along with their "cousins" the pterodactyl, pteranodon frequently appear in conjunction with dinosaurs in TMNT stories.
