In the game's Japanese version, it is known as kodama (コダマ), which is a traditional Japanese tree spirit - however, it is written in the manual as katakana instead of hiragana (こだま), as it normally is when not in kanji. Based on this, it might be meant to read as a small/child (ko) spirit instead.
