In the IDW continuity's Donatello one-shot issue, the New World Expo was a scientific fair for geniuses who had developed technological advancements, including robotics and weapons. The prize was a large grant intended to fund the winner's future projects.
Donatello attended the Expo as a spectator. Harold Lilja was one of the competitors, but was disqualified initially due to having damaged a hot dog cart. It was later revealed that Baxter Stockman had sponsored the Expo in order to draw Lillja out of hiding, in the hopes that he could help him locate the Turtles.
