In the IDW continuity, the unnamed mother of Natsu, the daughter of Hayashi Toru, died in the past along with Natsu's father, leaving Natsu to be raised by her maternal grandfather. In Karai's Path, part 3, Toru blamed his son-in-law's adherence to honor for causing both deaths.
