In the episode Nano, the microscopic robots were created as part of a government project by Dr. Marion Richards codenamed: Nanotech. The experiment proceeding as planned. The nanobots continued to work together as a colony, coordinated by the hive mind contained within the robotic cell. The nanobots quickly developed intelligence and an initially immature and childish personality. However, as it had the intelligence of a three-year old, it could only make simplistic robot forms out of other machines. Dr. Richards was annoyed by the presence of a personality, seeing the nanobots only as a tool. Richards thought to update the bots after a coffee, but before she had the chance, they reassembled a body with a drill to escape.
