Synopsis[]
In his lab inside the lair, Donatello is making modifications to the T-Phones that will improve their range by 40%. Using tweezers, he very carefully starts to remove a chip from a circuit board when suddenly Raphael bursts in and causes Don to crack the circuit board.
Don turns and shouts at him about the concept of knocking, but Raph snidely says he’ll be sure to ask the Kraang to invade at some other time. Leonardo apologizes for the interruption, but tells Don that his project will have to take a back seat.
Inside a warehouse, the Kraang are discussing the acquisition of “the things that are needed to modify the thing that is mutagen”. Using his bō, Don bowls down the two Kraang and then continues fighting as he complains to his brothers about how hard it is to find time for all of his projects. Though his brothers don’t take him seriously, Don continues fussing about lack of time and interruptions, and Michelangelo says he can’t be in two places at once. On a ledge above them, Leo has engaged with a Kraang, kicking it and causing it to drop the canister its holding in a vat, which results in a small explosion.
This gives Don an idea and he calls Mikey a genius. Later, back at the lair, Don introduces his brothers to his latest invention – nanobot M.I.T.E. – Miniature Intelligent Technology Engine. Leo guesses that it’s made from repurposed Kraang tech and then asks if Don didn’t learn anything from the T-Pod incident. Don explains the problem with the T-Pod was that its programming was too complex. MITE only has two functions: building and tracking.
He demonstrates by having MITE scan an image, acquire materials, and assemble what was in the picture. Don says that MITE will be able to help him build essential stuff and scout for raw materials while they’re out on patrol. Leo tells him they can discuss what new items they need while they’re out on patrol. Before leaving the lab, Don instructs MITE to repair the T-Phones and it begins to do so right away.
When they return later, after dealing with Footbots, Don is excited to see that MITE accomplished its task. His brothers congratulate him, though Raph says that nothing being on fire is a personal best. They don’t notice the machine behind them is missing some parts and its interior is aflame.
During the rest of the week, Don records events in his Science Journal. He recounts their nightly patrols and encounters with the Foot, the Kraang, and the Purple Dragons. Each night while the Turtles are out, MITE performs repair jobs and when Don returns, MITE helps him start on some new projects.
One evening, when they return, they find that MITE has duplicated itself and completed its assignment. Don is stunned that they made more of themselves, but confused because he didn’t give MITE an assignment. Leo picks up the object that MITE made, which looks like a mini-bazooka, and accidently shoots it. Mikey is directly in the line of fire and is hit by a cupcake with pink frosting and sprinkles. It turns out he gave the MITEs the job of making a cupcake bazooka.
Though Don is displeased with Mikey for giving the MITEs a job that wasn’t really essential, Leo is impressed at how they got the job done. Don thinks it’s great that now he has time to brainstorm ideas for new equipment. He lays out the blueprints he’s drawn for a number of his ideas such as an electrified bō, holographic camouflage, portable dimension portals and a spaceship.
Suddenly Raph rushes in with a report of a smash-and-grab at another chemical plant. Leo figures it’s the Kraang and tells Don to warm up the Shellraiser. As they leave the lab, the MITEs advance on the blueprints that are still on the table and start scanning them.
Meanwhile, the Turtles chase the Kraang van in their Shellraiser. Leo tells Raph to activate the Jaws so the Kraang don’t escape, but when he does, the Jaws drop off and fall on the street. Don is surprised that the Jaws misfired, but Raph is busy switching to the garbage cannon. Unfortunately, it shoots clean off the top of the Shellraiser and the entire cannon lands on top of the fleeing van.
The Shellraiser winds up on its side and the Turtles climb out. Raph says that’s certainly one way to stop them, but Don is busy investigating what could have gone wrong. He finds that one of the control panels is missing important components. Leo says it’s sabotage, but Don says the cuts are too precise to be Foot swords or Kraang handiwork. The wires look as though they were cut by lasers.
As soon as he realizes that, he rushes the others back to the lair. When they get home, Leo wants to know what’s going on. Don explains that he didn’t refine the MITE’s search parameters and that they aren’t getting the materials for the stuff they make outside the sewers, they’re taking things from his lab.
Entering the lab, he finds a swarm of MITEs in the process of building all of his dream projects while at the same time disassembling the lab. Leo tells Mikey to bar the door so that the MITEs can’t leave. Don discovers that they’re attempting to complete his concept drawings and creating a workforce capable of doing so. There is now a swarm of MITEs filling the lab and when Mikey tries to take his cupcake bazooka away from them, they punch him. This angers Raph, who says they’re going down, and Leo tells Donnie to guard the door. Don tries to stop his brothers, but they won’t listen, and soon find themselves overwhelmed by the MITEs. Finally getting through to the other Turtles, Don instructs them to stop fighting the MITEs and to let them finish their work. Mikey wants to know what happens when they run out of tech in the lab and Don says to trust him.
As soon as the Turtles stop fighting, the MITEs swarm away. Don says to wait and keep the door barred. Soon enough, the MITEs run out of raw materials and begin searching for a new source of those materials. They scan the room and soon home in on each other. Standing back, the Turtles watch the MITEs tear each other apart.
Don tells his brothers that with no more wild technology to harvest they started to cannibalize themselves. Then Leo asks if Don has any ideas on how he’s going to fix all of his busted tech. Don does, as a matter of fact. Later, all of the Turtles end up dumpster diving.
