The Mystic Ōdachi was Leonardo's signature weapon in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Overview[]
The Mystic Ōdachi has the ability to generate portals between different locations when its blade is swiped through the air. This can be activated through a variety of different motions like moving the blade in a circular motion ("Minotaur Maze"), in a single downward or upward swipe ("Many Unhappy Returns"), or via a combination of motions ("The Mutant Menace"). The number and size of the Ōdachi's portals can be dictated by its wielder: the larger the portal, the greater the distance and number of objects it can teleport. The limit to how far the Ōdachi's portals can teleport is currently unknown, the furthest known portal generated was from New York City, New York to Tahiti, French Polynesia. Manually closing the portals is unneeded as they close as soon as they are exited. Its wielder can physically manipulate the Ōdachi's already-generated portals, able to move them to a different location from where they were first generated ("Operation: Normal") or tilt them in a desired direction to control the angle that one exits from them ("Many Unhappy Returns"). The Ōdachi's portals possess a pull that can draw objects and people through them without them moving, allowing the teleportation of unwilling targets and a large number of objects as shown in "Portal Jacked!". Leonardo's lack of proficiency with portal creation makes him susceptible to portal jacking, the act of others stealing a portal's contents, notoriously committed by pirates of the Hidden City.
History[]
After both of Leo's katana were bitten to destruction by one of the Guardsmen's Yōkai mounts in "Mystic Mayhem", he replaced them with the Ōdachi found by Raphael inside Baron Draxum's laboratory.
The Ōdachi was broken by the Shredder during his invasion of the lair in "Finale Part 2: Shreddy or Not".
Trivia[]
- Leo sometimes exclaims "Hachi machi" when preparing to form a portal, paired with specific body movements.
- Leo seemingly doesn't own a scabbard for the Ōdachi but he actually does - there were rare times he wore it in a sheath in his blue belt on his back (in 'Donnie's Gifts' he wore it on his back when he put the shock collar down Meat Sweats pants; in 'Minotaur Maze' he wore it on his back when he was trying to convince his brothers to go through the Maze of Death with him; in Portal Jacked he wore it on a hip sheath with his pirate costume)
- Splinter has been shown to be remarkably proficient in creating portals from the Ōdachi and wields it multiple times throughout the series.
- It was stated in February 2024 by Rise of the TMNT staff writer Ron Corcillo in a Tweet that the explanation behind Splinter's portal-creation expertise is that, "Splinter spent a lot of time in the hidden city, so he knows about more mystic things than we realize. He has developed those skills, they've just been dormant for a while."[1]
- The geometric engravings featured on the hilt of the Ōdachi are reminiscent of the engravings on Draxum's horns.
