Some TMNT stuff was always meant for grownups. |
Michelangelo is the main protagonist of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, carrying on after his three brothers had died. He seeks to avenge the murders of his brothers, said to be the work of Oroku Hiroto, the grandson of Oroku Saki.
Personality[]
Michelangelo is no longer as cheerful, jokey, immature, optimistic and social as he used to be, now more distant, mature, serious, cautious, reflective, cold and etc. He was greatly affected by the death of his family and friends, especially that of his brothers, and moved heaven and earth for justice to be done by killing Oroku Hiroto. He became desperate and determined at the same time, as evidenced by the risks ready to take to achieve it and having difficulty in moving forward and continuing to the point of committing suicide (luckily, it was narrowly avoided by fainting as a result of a blood loss).
He misses all those he cared about, his family even more. He always brings their masks, weapons, and his father's book as a keepsake to achieve justice.
Getting to see old friends who were still alive, like April, had a positive impact on him, making him remember that no one is ever alone as well as rekindling hope and meaning in his life and awakening little of his old self. Michelangelo befriends Casey Marie Jones early on, seeing a lot through her of her father's traits and later on becomes her sensei (somewhat thanks to his brothers).
History[]
The youngest of four mutant turtles, Michelangelo was trained by Splinter as part of the Hamato Clan. When the time came to attack Shredder's compound, Michelangelo ended up having a breakdown among the many bodies of the Foot Clan before Splinter harshly, but reassuredly lectured the former to continue. After the Shredder's fall, his daughter, Karai, and the turtles formed a truce.Lost Years #1
However, under unknown circumstances, Karai violated the truce and sent the Foot Clan after the turtles and Splinter as they were on their way to celebrate their friends, April O'Niel and Casey Jones' engagement, resulting in Splinter being mortally wounded. When they brought Splinter to April and Casey's apartment, Raphael, assuming the former was dead, recklessly charged towards Karai, resulting in the two ending up in the harbor before Karai stabbed Raph in his throat while stabbed herself, resulting in her falling into a coma before being retrieved, leaving Raph for death. The Last Ronin #2. Michelangelo, along with Leonardo, Donatello, and Casey, retrieved the body and his remaining sai.Lost Years #4
During the 10 years after Raph's death, the turtles and Foot Clan raged war against each other before Splinter eventually decided to form a truce with the Purple Dragons, therefore turning Splinter's Hamato Clan division into a militia.Lost Day Special. Then, one day, Hiroto sent a letter, intending to bring a truce, but Mikey, having become skeptical and optimistic since Raph's death, did not trust it, but was brushed off by others before Donatello and Splinter leave for Japan to attend to the truce. However, Mikey's assumptions were proven right when Baxter Stockman made his attack on their base. While trying to get April and Fugitoid to safety, Mikey ended up separated from them before Stockman's Mousers self-destructed, levelling the base, and killing all members, including Leo and Casey. Thinking he was the only survivor, Mikey made his way to the lair, hoping to contact Donnie and Splinter, but upon receiving no reply, Mikey stowed away in a plane to reach Japan. The Last Ronin #3
Once the plane made its way to Japan, Mikey started to make his way to the snowy countryside, where Clan Hamato was. But, with only an old map and stories, he almost got lost, but eventually made it, only to be surrounded by samurai. Initially believed as a hostile, Mikey eventually told them who he was and they guided him to Shinichiro, who, after Michelangelo desperately demanded Donnie and Splinter's well-being, learnt that Hiroto had them killed in the truce, which turned out to be a trap. Now the only turtle remaining, Michelangelo declined Shinichiro's offer to stay in the village, and took Donatello's bō staff and Splinter's journal before making his way to the mountains.Last Ronin #4
When Michelangelo decides it's time for Hiroto to pay for what he's done, he scales the walls to the Foot-controlled New York City and infiltrates the zone. He steals a motorcycle belonging to a young woman called Jones and rides it as far as he can to Hiroto's compound, then crashes it into a tanker truck to create a distraction. While fighting off a cycloptic mouser, he crashes out of the building and is badly injured. Jones shows up and deliberately points the Foot in the wrong direction, following the injuried Michelangelo into the sewer, where he is preparing seppuku. Michelangelo passes out from blood loss, but not before Jones recognizes him as a mutant turtle. He dreams of being back at home with his brothers, but he wakes up in a hospital bed, overseen by April. The Last Ronin #1
Mikey finds out that April has been living in the lair with this "Jones" woman, who is actually her and Casey's daughter, Casey Marie. Michelangelo had assumed that April had died in the explosion that killed Casey and Leonardo, but she survived and it literally just cost her an arm and a leg. The Last Ronin #2.
While observing Casey Marie training herself, Michelangelo noted her skills were rusty before taunting her to hit him and easily defeats her. After lecturing her to let the enemy tire himself out, Casey Marie proclaims Michelangelo as her sensei. April then arrived, appreciating how Michelangelo will teach Casey Marie before asking for the remainder of how he got to Japan. Michelangelo reluctantly tells April that after arriving, he made his way to the snowy countryside, where Clan Hamato was, where he learnt of Donnie and Splinter's demises. The Last Ronin #4
Michelangelo is killed in The Last Ronin #5 but not before he succeeds in killing Hiroto and passes Splinter's journal to Casey Marie. He reunites with his father, brothers, and Casey in the afterlife.
