Meet Mondo Gecko is the 69th episode of the 2012 series.

Synopsis

Michelangelo and Casey Jones meet and befriend Jason, a skateboarding reptilian teenager who Mikey nicknames Mondo Gecko. But when Mikey and Casey fall into Xever Montes' trap, they learn their new friend is not all that he seems.

Plot

The episode begins with Michelangelo and Ice Cream Kitty watching the latest episode of Crognard the Barbarian, where the four heroes are attempting to escape a dangerous booby trap. Though all of them manage to escape, Crognard doesn't and falls into a pit of spikes, but is fine as his pecs are stronger than those of the spikes. However, the youngest brother has fallen bored and wants to hang out with someone, so he begins to search the lair. His luck doesn't fare well as Leonardo and April are practicing their skills (Leo offers him to join but he refuses), Raphael is playing with action figures and angrily tells Mikey to leave upon being seen, and Donatello is working on another batch of Retro-Mutagen to cure the afflicted Karai. He then heads into the main part of the lair, where he finds Casey Jones playing a video game. He has become annoyed though as he's constantly beaten the high score and has nobody to compete against. Upon hearing Mikey's cries of boredom, he offers to hang out with him, with Mikey happily accepting. The two then proceed to go skateboarding on the rooftops of New York City, where they are interrupted by a scream of "Cowabunga!", where a mutant gecko appears and skates above their heads, demonstrating excellent skills in the sport. Casey is completely shocked another mutant is loose in New York whereas Mikey thinks of a name for the creature, proclaiming him as "Mondo Gecko". However, the mutant returns to the duo and believes the name sucks, where he then proceeds to charge at Casey and Mikey utilizing his skateboard as a weapon.

• The episode's title homages Mondo Gecko's first appearance in the 1987 TV series: Michelangelo Meets Mondo Gecko.
• Robbie Rist, the voice of Mondo Gecko, also voiced Michelangelo in the 90's live action movies.
• Mondo Gecko's catchphrase "Cowabunga" is the turtles main battle cry in most versions of the series.
• The shirt Mondo Gecko wears has the word "tokay" on it.
  • This name references the species known as tokay geckos, a nocturnal arboreal gecko that ranges in areas such as northeast India, Indonesia, and west New Guinea.
• When Mikey swings down to rescue Mondo Gecko from falling down the building, his yodel is similar to that of Tarzan.
• When the arena lights up, the beat of the song We Will Rock You by Queen is played.
• Xever's last name, Montes, is revealed in this episode.
• Xever's aliases "Mr. X" is an homage to the 1987 series episode Michelangelo Meets Mondo Gecko, where Mondo Gecko first debuted, as Mondo was recruited by a man called Mr. X for a life of crime.
• Jason's human hair resembles Mondo Gecko's in the Archie comics.
• Raphael was playing with Mikey's Limited Edition Unicorn-man and a Chris Bradford action figure with an action feature that's activated by squeezing its legs, much like the 2014 film Combat Warriors figures.
