Long Island is a heavily-populated island off the east coast of the United States, belonging to the federated state of New York. The island is long and skinny in shape, hence its name. The New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens are located at Long Island's western end, and are home to most of the island's inhabitants. But the rest of the island (Nassau County and Suffolk County, New York) are far less densely populated, giving way to forests, farmland and vacation homes. These areas are connected to the mainland by way of New York City, but are not part of the city itself.
