In the IDW continuity, Kaneko was a wealthy merchant in feudal Japan, whose son was murdered by Lord Ochi. He responded by contracting the Foot Clan to kill Ochi as revenge; Hamato Yoshi and Oroku Saki were sent to carry out the mission.
After Ochi's death, Kaneko rewarded the ninja clan with a feast.
