  • -chan - honorific suffix indicating familiarity, used for small children, something or somebody cute, close friends

  • damare! - silence!; shut up!
  • dō - school; discipline; technique; method (literally "way")

  • naginata - a pole weapon used in feudal Japan
  • nēchan - big sister (informal)

  • ninja - a covert agent or mercenary in feudal Japan; a warrior that practices ninjutsu

  • o- - honorific prefix to exalt nouns. There is no direct English equivalent, but its use indicates a polite respect for the item named or the person to or about whom one is speaking

  • ohayō - good morning
  • ohayōgozaimasu - good morning (polite, literally "it is early")

  • -sama - honorific suffix used for people of higher status (including deities, guests, customers). The Japanese equivalent of Sir/Ma'am/Your Grace
  • samurai - a warrior class in medieval and pre-modern Japan; one who serves
  • -san - honorific suffix used formally and informally. The Japanese equivalent of Mr./Mrs./Ms./Miss
  • sashimi - a Japanese delicacy made of sliced fresh fish or meat
  • sayōnara - farewell; goodbye; so long
  • -sensei - honorific suffix for teachers, artists, or high-level professionals. The Japanese equivalent of Teacher/Master/Dr./Prof.
  • seppuku - samurai ritual suicide
  • shinigami - a type of supernatural spirit in Japanese folklore (literally "death god")
  • shinobi - male ninja
  • shizukani - be quiet
  • shuriken - a Japanese concealed weapon (literally "hidden hand blade")
  • sumimasen - excuse me (to grab another's attention); sorry (formal apology); thank you
  • sumō - a traditional Japanese wrestling sport (literally "striking one another")
  • suppon nabe - turtle hot pot stew
  • sushi - a Japanese vinegared rice dish
