Plot[]

The episode opens with an eerie scene, in which a squad of Kraang are chasing quite a large creature trailing numerous cables from it's limbs. It puts up quite a vicious fight and, although it is badly wounded, it manages to escape into the sewers.

Later, the Turtles are seen relaxing and spending some in the Sewer Lair. Leo is watching Space Heroes and Raph (who is sitting very close by) deliberately tries to embarrass Leo by saying that the show stinks, but Leo utterly denies this. Then, an urgent news story on TV suddenly comes on, reporting how a sewer worker has recently been attacked by what appears to be a reptilian mutant monster. The Turtles decide that they simply cannot have a dangerous mutant attracting news crews down into the sewers, and thus, they plan to go investigate. Going to the same tunnel that was displayed on TV, the Turtles soon find a trail of mammoth footprints and follow them. They then stumble upon a Mutant battling against yet another squad of Kraang droids. The beast holds it's own very well at first, but The Kraang then get the better of him with electrical stun batons. They demand that he tell them the precise location of a thing called a "power cell". The mutant bluntly refuses and so The Kraang proceed to zap him until he falls unconscious.

Mikey wants to help the mutant out, but his brothers are irresolute, as they know not one thing about him. Mikey goes to the rescue anyway, and his brothers reluctantly follow him. Two Kraang then try to drag the unconscious Mutant away, but Mikey quickly stops them. With all of The Kraang now either defeated or gone, Leo says that they must get away too before even more Kraang show up. Mikey refuses to leave the alligator mutant behind, however, and, after dozens of moments of desperately trying to tug on the beast from every single angle, he eventually gets his wish/convinces his brothers to help him take the it all the way back to the lair.

In the lair, Mikey is very convinced that the mutant will be grateful to them for saving him. However, once he comes to, the mutant immediately attacks the exhausted Turtles until Leo is able to subdue it with a stun gun that Donnie owns. Splinter then comes in and the boys explain the entire situation. Splinter actually commends Mikey for his altruism and he then charges Mikey with befriending him so that they could possibly learn what knowledge he has about The Kraang. He then orders the other three Turtles to at least try and find the so called 'Power Cell' before The Kraang are successfully able to.

Later, the alligator mutant wakes up, only to find himself chained to a wall in a vastly unfamiliar place. Michelangelo then appears and introduces himself, explaining that they had brought him here to recover. However, in spite of the circumstances, the mutant demands to be set free and is at first very hostile towards Mikey. Mikey then offers him some of his homemade "Pizza Noodle Soup". After a spoonful, the mutant calms down a lot, saying that it is the best thing that he has ever tasted. Mikey is delighted to find someone who actually enjoys some of his cooking and he begins feeding the Mutant spoonful after spoonful. Mikey then asks the Mutant what his name is, and, after learning that he does not have one, dubs him "Leatherhead". Mikey then asks Leatherhead why he chose to attack Donnie before, and Leatherhead explains that, at times, he utterly loses control of himself and is not able to differentiate right from wrong, though he is always horrified and apologetic for what he has done afterward. Mikey reasons that Leatherhead must view himself as a monster, because that is how he has always been treated.

Meanwhile, Leo, Raph, and Donnie are all exploring a sewer pool in search of the power cell. However, they come upon a tunnel that is riddled with tons of homemade booby traps, including flying road signs, floor spikes, and rolling spiked barrels. They manage to reach the end of the tunnel uninjured and somehow they find the power cell hidden behind a secret door in a wall; A glowing crystal within a glass cylinder. Donnie discovers, painfully, that the crystal puts out an amazing amount of energy and, with the right components, it could power almost anything effectively.

They quickly bring the power cell back to the lair, only to find that Mikey has set Leatherhead free. They are terrified that the dangerous and unstable creature has been let loose, but Mikey explains that Leatherhead is now completely mellow Leo attempts to ask him about The Kraang's plans, but, unbeknownst to Leo, the mutant loses control of his rage at every mentioning of the word. Mikey is able to calm him down, however, also getting frustrated with Leo for saying that very word. He then lets the others ask their questions. Donnie then fearfully steps forward, holds out the power cell, and asks what it is. Leatherhead loses control once again upon seeing the cell, calling Donnie a thief and seizing his head once again. The Turtles attack him, Mikey trying to calm him down again. However, Leatherhead bluntly ignores him and subsequently defeats them all, including Mikey himself, and he then angrily seizes the power cell.

Splinter then arrives on the scene and demands that he step away from his sons. Leatherhead attacks him but, through immense speed and skill, Splinter, though narrowly, is able to use Leatherhead's own size and strength against him Splinter demands that Leatherhead leave immediately, and he does, taking the cell with him. Splinter then rushes to aid the frightened boys and they discover that Mikey has already left to find where Leatherhead could have possibly gone.

Leatherhead retreats back to his very own lair, a graffiti-covered subway car. He plays an old vinyl jazz record that seems to calm his rage. Mikey then comes in and demands a reasonable explanation for all of his actions. Leatherhead reminds him that he must be alone at all times, as there is a very dangerous force within him. Mikey's brothers soon arrive as well and command Leatherhead to leave Mikey alone. Leatherhead pleads that he means Mikey no harm and he tells the Turtles the story of his past.

He was raised as a baby by a kind human boy, until his parents discovered him and rudely flushed him down the toilet, ending up in the sewers. The Kraang then found him after a short while, took him back to their home dimension, and performed a bunch of horrific experiments on him. Leatherhead endured all of this, however, and his spirit remained completely unbroken. He escaped captivity only six months ago, used The Kraang's dimensional portal to return to Earth and he managed to steal the Power Cell that was running it. He took it in order to spare the innocent people of Earth from The Kraang's malice, as the robots can now no longer come and go freely between worlds and wreak utter havoc in the process.

Just then, a squad of Kraang droids coincidentally attack the subway car (as they are able to track the cell's energy signature). The Turtles defend Leatherhead to the best of their ability, but there are simply too many and they can't hold them off for a long period of time. Leo then suggests that Donnie use the power cell to try and get the subway car mobilized. Leatherhead then hands Mikey the cell, as he now sincerely entrusts him with it, and he then confronts The Kraang once more to buy Donnie some time. Leatherhead decimates The Kraang forces and Donnie manages to attach/hook the power cell into the subway car's motor at the same time. The cell supercharges the motor and sends the car, along with the Turtles inside, rocketing through the tunnels at an unbelievable rate of speed. When they manage to pull the brake and come to an abrupt stop, they find themselves right outside the renowned sewage treatment plant.

Back down in the tunnel, two badly mangled Kraang start saying to one another that they must inform the others that the Turtles have made off with their power cell. Leatherhead then looms over them, however, saying that they won't be telling anyone anything and lunges out to attack them.

Quotes[]

Master Splinter: Raphael, there is no monster more dangerous then a lack of compassion. (Sees Leatherhead) My mistake...

Donatello: And the fact that he had me BY THE FACE, MIKEY!!!

Donatello: But we're still chaining him up, right?"
Master Splinter: Of course, I am compassionate, not insane.

Raphael: Sometimes it's good to be a turtle. (Puts his head in shell when something comes flying at him, making it look like his head was cut off. Leonardo and Donatello freak out until Raphael pops his head back out.) And sometimes it's good to be a short turtle.

Guy on TV: It was like part man, part reptile, and all monster! It came outta nowhere and attacked me! (Leo and Donnie stare at Raph)
Raphael: It wasn't me!

Leonardo: We are NOT taking that monster home with us!
Michelangelo: He's not a monster! He's a giant, Kraang crushing, mutant alligator monster! I said monster, didn't I?
Raphael, Donatello and Leonardo: (While nodding) Yeah.
Michelangelo: Well you know what I meant!
Raphael: I thought you meant monster.

Michelangelo: It's like you always say Master Splinter; "The enemy of my enemy is my bro."
Splinter: That is not exactly what I said...

Michelangelo: Hey guys! Leatherhead is totally off the chain!
Raphael: You mean you set him free?!
Michelangelo: What? No... "Off the chain" mean he's cool. (others sigh in relief) And that's why I set him free!
Donatello: You let that maniac lose?! Maybe you forgot that he grabbed me by the face. So I'll remind you. He grabbed me… BY THE FACE!!!
Raphael: Relax, you've been hurt worse since.

Michelangelo: (Leatherhead losing control) Whoa, buddy! (starts stroking back) Cleansing breaths! (rubs feet) Cleansing breaths. (massages back) cleansing breaths...

Kraang: Give to Kraang the power cell that Kraang has come to demand that you give to Kraang!
Michelangelo: IT'S THE KRAANG!!!

Trivia[]

  • This episode was originally titled "Leatherhead".
  • According to the show writer Kenny Byerly, the ugly, stinky place that Mikey thinks is beautiful, where the Turtles end up after their wild subway ride, was originally not a sewage plant but New Jersey.
  • On July 11, 2019, the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Extreme Spots/Squirrel Record" was said to air on the TV guide of Nicktoons but it instead showed this episode.

Errors[]

  • In the Russian dub, when Donnie reminds Mikey that Leatherhead grabbed him by the face, he spoke in Leo's voice.
