Plot[]

In New York, Huginn and Muninn offer themselves to a figure for services. The figure is Meat Sweats, who states that he isn't interested in hiring Huginn and Muninn, but rather seeks to eat them. Sometime later, Meat Sweats prepares the meal that Huginn and Muninn will be a part of while the gargoyles are caged. Contemplating his grim future makes Muninn recall his past and he begins to remember the time he and Huginn started working for Baron Draxum.

13 years prior to the start of the series, Huginn and Muninn live in the Goyles of Fortune and are treated like weaklings. Muninn fears that the two of them will never be hired, but Huginn assures him that they will eventually be employed to live in a comfortable house with a dog bed for them to sleep in. Sarge Goyle then informs the gargoyles that someone ordered two gargoyles. He enlists Huginn and Muninn to bring two stronger gargoyles to their employer's residence using a carriage.

On their way, Muninn complains about having to transport their fellow gargoyles. Huginn tells him that they're smarter than others recognize and suggests they should use a shortcut to Devil's Backbone to prove their cleverness. They turn to the direction and because of the bumpy road, the gargoyles fall off and are grabbed by the lava demon beneath Devil's Backbone.

The moment they arrive, Huginn introduces the both of them. They are amazed by the strong, handsome alchemist, but Draxum is surprised by their small stature and lack of physical strength. Huginn realizes that the two gargoyles they were transporting are missing, so he says that he and Muninn are the Goyles of Fortune that Draxum ordered. Draxum then leads Huginn and Muninn inside his laboratory where he explains that he is using alchemy to create mutants to protect the Hidden City from humanity. Muninn finds turtles inside a box and Draxum explains that they are their prime subjects that he will mutate. He orders Huginn and Muninn to bridle his new unicorn Yōkai. Huginn assume the unicorn would be a gentle creature, but they are instead attacked by it.

Sometime later, Huginn and Muninn return to Draxum with their first assignment completed. Draxum then tasks them with the recruitment of Lou Jitsu. He explains that Lou Jitsu's DNA can create numerous powerful mutant soldiers, but Big Mama is holding him captive in the Battle Nexus.

Huginn and Muninn fly to the Battle Nexus disguised as Battle Nexus competitors. This allows them entry into Champions' Row where they find Lou Jitsu in his cell. They inform him that Draxum is interested in experimenting on him. Relieved he isn't being demanded to engage in combat, Lou Jitsu doesn't resist being taken by Huginn and Muninn and brings along his rat companion.

Huginn and Muninn carry Lou Jitsu back to Draxum's laboratory. Draxum is impressed with their competency and officially employs them. While Lou Jitsu is trapped in Draxum's cage, he takes a kind interest in the turtles and attempts to name them. Later, Draxum informs Lou Jitsu that those very turtles will become soldiers in Draxum's future army as he places each of them in green mutation chambers. Lou Jitsu is outraged and refuses to permit Draxum to alter them into "violent monsters". Draxum starts the mutation machine and mutates all of the turtles. Lou Jitsu, filled determination, breaks free from the machine and jumps off a wall to drive his knee into Draxum's face. The force of the attack causes Draxum to collide with the mutation machine and the now-mutated turtles are released from their mutation chambers. Draxum then retaliates against Lou Jitsu in combat.

Meanwhile, Huginn and Muninn hear the commotion and consider how to assist Draxum. Huginn suggests that Draxum's unicorn could stop Lou Jitsu, but the unicorn bites him and Muninn and kicks them into the main machine of the laboratory, causing it to explode. With Draxum subdued, Lou Jitsu releases the rest of the Yōkai from their cages and picks up the four turtles to protect them from Draxum and his crumbling laboratory. He removes his rat companion from inside his jumpsuit in an offer of freedom and the rat bites his thumb before running away. The ooze that mutated the turtles then showers upon Lou Jitsu and he slowly starts to mutate into a rat.

After the destruction, Draxum watches in solemn silence as most of his work is obliterated. Huginn lies that it was Lou Jitsu who destroyed Draxum's laboratory instead of him and Muninn. Draxum says it will take years to restore his research and laboratory and that he will restart.

The flashback ends and Huginn easily unlocks his and Muninn's cage door, to Muninn's confusion, explaining that he only stayed in Meat Sweats' cage because he enjoys hearing Muninn reminisce, not because he was trapped.

Quotes[]

  • Muninn: Oh, man. I see my whole life flash before me.
  • Huginn: Oh, yeah? Which parts specifically?

  • Draxum: Those rare surface creatures will one day become my greatest warriors.

Trivia[]

  • The title of the episode is a reference of the song "Girls, Girls, Girls" by the American rock band Mötley Crüe.
  • This episode marks the final in-person appearances in the series of both Huginn and Muninn.
  • This episode reveals the full origins of the Turtles.
  • Lou Jitsu had originally referred to Leo and Raph respectively as "Green" and "Green Number Two" prior to their mutation.
  • 20190223 134944

Lou Jitsu in "The Evil League of Mutants".

This episode potentially contains some continuity errors.
    • When Huginn and Muninn recount the Turtles' mutation in "The Evil League of Mutants", Draxum's machine has six visible mutation chambers, two on top and four on the bottom[1], but in this episode only four are shown.
    • In "The Evil League of Mutants", Lou Jitsu has two tubes attached to his chest, unrestrained wrists, and wears no clothes, not even his sunglasses. But in this episode, Lou Jitsu is seen with no tubing attached to him, his wrists bound by vines, and fully clothed.
    • Lou Jitsu screams and shudders in pain as Draxum activates his machine to mutate the Turtles in "The Evil League of Mutants", but shows no physical discomfort in this episode during the same event.
    • In the final shot of Lou Jitsu and the turtles in "The Evil League of Mutants", the fire is green while in this episode the fire is blue.
  • It was revealed in December 2019 by Rise of the TMNT staff writer Russ Carney in a Tweet that, "Some of the inspiration for 'Goyles Goyles Goyles' was derived from the classic Heckle and Jeckle cartoons of yesteryear."[2]
  • Lou Jitsu having a rat companion is a reference to previous incarnations of Hamato Yoshi having a pet rat that would later become Splinter.
  • It was confirmed in December 2022 by Rise of the TMNT staff writer Ron Corcillo in a Tweet that this episode takes place in-universe roughly in 2005.[3]
    • This is congruent as the Rise of the TMNT TV series begins in-universe in 2018 and Huginn and Muninn state in "Todd's Lemonade" that "The Evil League of Mutants" takes place on the 13th year anniversary of the Turtles' mutation. 2018 and 2005 are 13 years apart.
    • As Raph is one year older than Donnie and Leo and two years older than Mikey, it is likely that Raph hatched around 2003, Donnie and Leo hatched around 2004, and Mikey hatched around the same year he mutated in 2005.
  • It was revealed in January 2023 by Rise of the TMNT background painter Jermaine Jose in a Tweet that, "I remember since this was a flashback episode, I wanted to somehow indicate that with texture, so I added a subtle dust/paper texture throughout."[4]
  • The gesture Lou Jitsu does in his Battle Nexus cell is reminiscent of viśuddha mudrā ("throat chakra seal"), used in Buddhism and Hinduism. However, his thumbs should touch. While Lou Jitsu chants the bījamantra "Ōṃ", the bījamantra specific to viśuddha is "Ham".
    • The other gesture Lou Jitsu does in Draxum's laboratory is jñāna mudrā ("knowledge seal"). An Indian alternative medicine system called Āyurveda explains the body as being comprised of five elements; fire, air, ether, earth, and water. The thumb represents fire, the index finger represents air, the middle finger represents ether, the ring finger represents earth, and the pinky finger represents water. Jñāna mudrā is used to connect the air element (index finger) to the fire element (thumb).
  • There are 35 tally marks drawn on the interior wall of Lou Jitsu's Battle Nexus cell. Lou Jitsu uses Western tally marks instead of Japanese tally marks made from the kanji .
