Good King Wenceslas

Donatello and April O'Neil singing Good King Wenceslas.

In the real world, Good King Wenceslas is a traditional English-language Christmas carol about Saint Wenceslaus. Wenceslaus was a 10th century duke of Bohemia, a region that now forms the core of the modern European nation of Czechia, and he had a reputation for heroic virtue. Over time his legend reached as far away as England, where he became celebrated in the Christmas carol bearing his name.

Some TMNT stuff really isn't for little kids.

In the story "What Goes Around... ...Comes Around!" in the Mirage continuity, Hamato Splinter and the Turtles were living with April O'Neil in her apartment in the Second Time Around building, and on that night they were all preparing for Christmas Eve, except for Leonardo who, unbeknownst to the others, was at the same time was caught greatly outnumbered in a drawn-out battle against countless Foot Ninja. In one of the scenes in the peace of the apartment, April and Donatello took a moment to sing Good King Wenceslas together.

Lyrics

Donnie " "Good king Wenceslas went out, on the Feast of Stephen..."

April " "...When the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even!" "

Donnie " "Brightly shone the moon that night, though the frost was cruel..." "

There are more lyrics, but the next panel returns to Leonardo's battle.

Trivia

  • In the English language, both Wenceslaus with a "u" and Wenceslas without a "u" are common spellings of the name, with the spelling with "u" more associated with the duke as a historical figure and the spelling without "u" more associated with the Christmas carol. In the modern Czech language he is called Václav.
  • In the IDW continuity, Wenceslaus is also the name of the drummer of the all-mutant metal band After the Bomb. The character was designed without a name by Sophie Campbell, and later named by Steven W. Hunt.
