The surface of Earth was historically dominated by Yōkai society instead of humanity. However, at some point in time, the Yōkai were driven below ground into perpetual hiding by humans who then overtook the Earth's surface as its dominate society.
A millennium ago, the Krang invaded Earth from space. Landing in Japan, the Krang began their violent world takeover, but were impeded by four mystic warriors who forged a Mystic Key to seal the Krang in a prison dimension. In the original timeline, the Key was stolen by the Foot Clan a millennium after the initial invasion and the Krang were released from their prison realm, allowing them to resume their conquest of Earth, causing an apocalypse. Over decades, the Krang achieved global domination in 2044 despite the resistance that had organized to oppose them. Michelangelo and Leonardo sent Casey Jones II backwards in time using a time gateway to the day the Key was first taken by the Foot to preclude the Krang apocalypse.
