Christmas is a Christian holiday that occurs on December 25th within Roman Catholic and Protestant traditions, and on January 7th within Orthodox Christianity. Its celebrations are based around the New Testament telling about the birth of Jesus in the town of Bethlehem.
Among Christmas' secular traditions are eating Christmas food, baking, giving each other presents, singing and dancing together and decorating a Christmas tree. Christmas is a national holiday in the United States of America.
Christmas is also celebrated in Japan, typically secularly for Christianity is a minority religion in Japan. It is not a national holiday. Christmas Eve (December 24th) is celebrated among Japanese more than Christmas day. Christmas is regarded as more romance-oriented than family-oriented, with couples commonly going on dates to celebrate, and there is less emphasis on gift exchange. Christmas foods in Japan are fried chicken, KFC in particular, as well as a sponge cake called Christmas cake (katakana: クリスマスケーキ, "Kurisumasu kēki"). Shopping and decorating with lights and ornaments are also Japanese Christmas customs. In Japan, Santa is called Santa-san (Japanese: サンタさん) or Santa Claus (katakana: サンタクロース, "Santa Kurosu").
