"This time, I will finally dispatch you to Hell!"
Mega Shredder in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus

The leader of the Foot Clan and archenemy of the Ninja Turtles. The Shredder's true identity reveals him as an evil Utrom that has caused many crimes and seeks to destroy the Utrom Homeworld.

Appearances[]

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles[]

Console[]

Shredder appears as the final boss of Stage 6: Justice. Fought within the seventh area, he first enters the area from the top of his building. He lands on the heliport to give dialogue to the four Turtles and offer them a chance to join the Foot Clan, who without a doubt refuse. The angry Shredder then proceeds to attack the four who would dare defy him.

Shredder will strike with his sword once he is close to a hero. Like the Turtles and many other playable characters, he has his own set of combo inputs, including a Stun attack. One combo has him stabbing the ground with the Goblin Blade, releasing a shortwave explosion surrounding him. Another combo (all weak attack presses), has him spiral charging toward a hero. If a player jumps near the Shredder, he may counteract with an uppercut. If a player strays too far a distance, Shredder may retaliate with a long aerial attack jump aimed directly at a hero. He normally paces slowly around the battlefield but after taking damage, he sometimes runs. Because of the Goblin Blade's long reach, it may prove difficult to attack Shredder. A well-timed Dash may close in the distance followed by a quick strike. If a player is knocked down, they can use invincibility frames when getting back up to retaliate strike. Shuriken deal minor damage but cause him to flinch, allowing for a quick counterstrike opening. Electric Shuriken (also found in the Heliport) will knock him back with minor damage, but he occasionally retaliates a hit with his long aerial attack jump. Explosive Shuriken deliver the most damage to him. His attacks become more aggressive once his health is low. Upon his defeat, he kneels down, and the following stage clear will occur:

  • If at least one of the Turtles did not clear Stage 6: Justice, a real-time cutscene will play displaying Player 1's Turtle single-handedly delivering the final blow to Shredder, in an aerial "showdown" manner. Shredder is wounded from the blow, which causes him to stumble to the corner of the heliport and eventually falls over the edge, plummeting to his demise. The four Turtles stare over the edge, with Player 1's Turtle in front putting their weapon guaranteed of their victory over the Shredder.
  • If all four Turtles have cleared Stage 6: Justice (or if three of the Turtles have and the player defeats Shredder using the turtle that hasn't yet cleared before), the Shredder gets up from his defeat and retreats into the top of the tower. The Turtles give chase and face him as Oroku Saki within the Shinto Palace, the true final stage of the game. After a speech about his strength without his Shredder armor, the Turtles face him for a final battle.

Oroku Saki fights using hand-to-hand melee strikes, using similar combo inputs as many other characters. His attacks are known to string combos together in order to inflict maximum damage and stun locking to a player. If a player is aerial, he will retaliate with an uppercut. When damaged to a certain point in his health, he will be enraged, with his aura glowing red and him moving at twice the speed, also being immune to stuns and knockbacks. This rage mode only lasts for about a minute, and he can still be damaged at this time. When his health is depleted, an animated cutscene will play following the Turtles efforts to defeat Saki. Once victorious, the Turtles and friends all leave the palace, but the camera scrolls over to Saki's hand, which shows motion before falling flat.

Game Boy Advance[]

The Shredder is fought as the game's final boss, fought inside his Shinto Palace. His Goblin Blade grants him protective shielding and levitation. The shielding can be disrupted by launching the blade's solid projectile strikes back at the Shredder.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus[]

Console[]

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus, it is revealed that one of Ch'rell's crimes on the Utrom Homeworld was murdering Slashuur's family and giving him amnesia as well as the scar across his face. Furthermore, Slashuur, after having recovered his memory, knew Ch'rell as Shredder, meaning that at least in the games, he had this moniker prior to coming to Earth. He also had an exoskeleton that was only seen in Slashuur's flashbacks of the Utrom Homeworld.

In-game, Ch'rell is encountered a total of three times, as three separate Shredder armor variants.

Feudal Japan Shredder

His first encounter is during the virtual reality world of Feudal Japan, as the last stage's boss. He is fought on a small, fenced cliff, after his CG introduction. Feudal Japan Shredder wields the Goblin Blade and strikes primarily with projectile attacks. He may sometimes walk close to a hero to strike them at a greater distance. He is immune to Stun, but can be frozen. His attacks include:

  • A two-hit combo attack using the Goblin Blade.
  • A multi-electrical projectile blast with limited homing capabilities (he sometimes says "Launch missiles!", "Away with you!", "I will obliterate you!", or "Die!" when firing, or one of the playable characters will shout a warning). Upon the initial blast, he also fires a quick large blast aimed at a hero.
  • A set of three explosive, electrical-infused kunai, usually launched at the end of a combo attack if you're a distance away from him.
  • When in close-range, he may attempt to grab a hero with his left hand and fling them a great distance behind him.

Shredder will attempt to remain close to the center of the cliff, if he wanders too far then he will dash back to the center. The cliff has bordered fences that can be removed by continuous attacks from the player, revealing the cliff's large chasm from above. Although Shredder can be defeated normally by fully depleting his health bar, he can be defeated instantly if one is able to deliver a powerful knockback attack to Shredder that causes him to fall off of the cliff and into the abyss. Regardless of how he was defeated, the animated clear scene shows Feudal Japan Shredder falling into the river below.

Shredder

Shredder appears a second time, this time in his noticeable modern-day armor. He leads an army of Foot Ninja to attack the TCRI building. The first stage of Episode 7 has the heroes clear the various Foot Ninja in a limited amount of time (four minutes), while the second stage has the heroes encounter the Shredder. This time, however, he isn't fought as a boss. Episode 7-2 has the heroes' objective of grabbing and throwing all of the Utroms inside the room onto the Transmat before the five minute time limit expires. The Shredder will appear in the center of the Transmat and constantly fire his "missiles" and his triple kunai spread. He cannot be attacked directly and merely serves as a great obstacle to the rescue of the Utroms, but he can still be hit by thrown shuriken, becoming stunned for a couple of seconds upon taking enough hits. Upon clearing the stage, an animated scene (borrowed from the TV series) plays that ultimately reveals the Shredder to be not only an Utrom, but the exact same Utrom prisoner from the Feudal era. Donatello calibrates and activates the Transmat so that the turtles and Splinter can escape before the building implodes. While Ch'rell gives chase to the heroes, he attempts to jump onboard the Transmat's beam but is too late by a fraction of a second, causing him to land and remain inside the building with a mere two seconds of the bomb remaining. He watches and screams in horror as his escape is void, the building then implodes with him in it, and the Turtles and Splinter are teleported above their Battle Shell, escaping the blast.

After stage 9-1 is cleared, it is later revealed that the Utrom Shredder's body survived the explosion. Under Karai's watch, Ch'rell beings his healing process inside a containment chamber while his body is surrounded by numerous Biocytes, during which he vows revenge on the Turtles before laughing maniacally.

Mega Shredder

Returning with his all-new armor, Mega Shredder is fought as the game's final boss onboard the burning main deck of the Freighter Kuraiyama. Unique to this armor is a completely different and unidentified sword that essentially mimics the powers of the Goblin Blade. This sword possesses a sun-shaped center and a hilt with a tengu-resembling face. Although much of his attacks from prior encounters remain the same, he has a new attack where he will fire off a lightning strike directly down on a hero. This must be dashed to avoid. Notably, Mega Shredder will constantly dash around the arena, preferring to stay close to a hero to strike. This behavior can be exploited by countering with Charged attacks, however. After he is defeated, the Turtles fall onto a lower chamber of the deck, where Mega Shredder is fought again. The battle is the same as the previous round, but this time the area is surrounded by walls of flame.

Once he is defeated a second time, an animated cutscene will play that shows him striking down a victory-declaring Zog. As Ch'rell prepares to finish off the Turtles and Splinter, Zog recovers and bear hugs the Shredder, trapping him. Zog carries the ensnared Shredder over a flaming pit, where Zog plummets with him into a sea of flames.

Mega Shredder can be fought in the final round of the Foot Fight tournament, where he is accompanied by a trio of Foot Mechs.

Game Boy Advance[]

Shredder first appears during cutscenes alongside his lackey Dr. Baxter Stockman, now reduced to being a head implanted in a cybernetic spider body. According to the Turtles, Shredder was researching powerful Crystals, attempting to harness their energy. The two villains devise a plan to use this energy to teleport the Turtles to a far-off galaxy away from Earth in the hopes of ridding them. However, Shredder angrily grows concerned over Stockman's readings, who suggests similar energy is being used on the other world the Turtles are in. Stockman is able to disrupt the teleportation energy by teleporting the Turtle's weapons somewhere else nearby should they ever use the teleportation.

Shredder appears as the final boss of the game, but he can only be fought on Normal or Hard Modes. Additionally, the player is required to obtain a prerequisite number of crystals, then defeat Stockman in order to reach Shredder. If done correctly, the Turtles will chase after and defeat a Spider Stockman, who guards a Teleportal. The victorious Turtles then use the teleportal to reach Shredder for the final fight of the game.

Shredder uses the Goblin Blade for this battle. He demonstrates the following attack phases during this battle:

  • At the start of the battle/stage, Shredder uses the blade's energy to create a protective shield of energy around him, preventing any direct damage done to him. The energy shield can only be dispersed by reflecting the Goblin Blade's own energy back at Shredder. After three blasts, he uses the blade to levitate to continue lobbing energy blasts from above, before returning back down to the ground.
  • For phase 2, he uses the Goblin Blade's energy to create an energy duplicate of himself. Both him and the duplicate will alternate walking towards a Turtle one at a time. When in close range, Shredder (or the clone) will perform a large, quick slash with the Blade. The clone has only half the amount of Health as the original Shredder. If the clone is defeated, Shredder will continue to inch closer. After he performs his next close range slash, a replacement clone will immediately appear to the side of the room opposite he is farthest away from. The third phase begins once Shredder's own health lowers enough. At that time, the clone immediately disappears.
  • For the third phase, Shredder will walk slowly to a Turtle to slash them. Between small distances, he will point the Goblin Blade to a Turtle and unleash from it a large beam of energy that can be ducked. When a Turtle passes through Shredder to get behind him, he will hover over a Turtle and fire a large beam of energy from above, doing this three times before returning to ground to repeat. If a Turtle passes through him while he is firing a long beam, he will not perform the hovering attacks, continuing his grounded pattern.

Once Shredder is defeated, his Utrom self is revealed on a floating platform. He flees and the Turtles give chase. In the next scene, the player Turtle must escape the building within a 20 second time Limit while Ch'rell gives chase and constantly attacks the Turtles with a laser beam equipped on his platform to hinder their escape. Ch'rell can be attacked in order to briefly stun him, but he cannot be defeated during this timed event. Shurikens will leave him briefly dazed while a heavy weapon strike will sink his platform to the floor for a small moment. The Turtles must reach the large teleportal pad at the end of the stage before time runs out and before Ch'rell reaches it first. If successful, the Turtle teleports away, leaving Ch'rell behind in the building. It is possible to clear this entire stage without using a Turtle's weapon.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare[]

After the Triceraton invasion, disguised as Oroku Saki, he emerges as the forerunner in rebuilding the city. Oroku Saki is a boss in the game and is fought inside his mansion. His appearance here is in his business suit while he once again wields the Goblin Blade. Much of his behavior and attacks are borrowed from "his" Battle Nexus appearance. He now has a new attack where he will dash to the back-center of the room and fire off multiple simultaneous groups of lighting strikes.

The Mega Shredder from Same As It Never Was is also featured as a boss.

TMNT: Mutant Melee[]

The Shredder is playable, as well as a Golden Shredder. The latter's appearance may be based on the gold trophy Antique from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus.
