Synopsis[]
Late afternoon in Central Park finds April O'Neil seated on a park bench. She places a call to Casey Jones and when he answers without acknowledging the caller, April thinks he either doesn’t have his caller I.D. on or that he’s deleted her from his contacts. She is only jesting and he quickly greets her, explaining that he sent his call to his earpiece. April says she saw his text and wanted to call him back. Casey points out that it’s 5:00 am in Japan. April forgot the time difference and asks if she woke him or interrupted anything. Casey says he’s at the fish market and that if he loses her, he’ll call back.
Casey is indeed at the Tsukiji Outer Market in Tōkyō, engaging in a fight. April hears the sound and asks if that’s what is happening. He says some punks were harassing a vendor who pays Karai for protection. He tells April that the punks, who are now both down on the ground, can’t hit hard enough to knock out his earpiece. April is surprised he’s helping to run a protection racket, but Casey says it’s legit. He then tells her to hold on as he speaks in broken Japanese to the men, telling them not to bother the fishmonger and then drops the name of the Foot Clan.
As the two men run off, Casey tells April that Clyde found him an app to help him learn Japanese. Just as he says that, another man whacks him over the head with a gigantic fish. April hears the noise and wants to know what’s going on, so he tells her he was hit by a tuna. She wants to know if she should call back later, but he says no, as he really wants to discuss something with her. While he’s talking, he dodges another attempt to hit him with the tuna, and then kicks the back of his attacker’s knee.
Casey uses his bat to hit the man in the head, breaking the bat but putting the man down. Casey says that Karai went through something and now she’s acting weird. Before he can explain what he means, one of the men he thought he’d chased off tackles him. The man says there are two of them and the Foot Clan can’t tell them what to do. Casey elbows one in the face and then head butts the other, before turning to kick the elbowed man in the chin. With all three attackers down, Casey asks if April is still on the line.
Later, April continues her conversation with Casey, who has left the fish market and is standing on the roof of a building overlooking the city. April sums up Casey’s story by saying that Karai lost someone she cared about, figured out a shortcut to become an expert in magic, and then went crazy. Casey says Karai isn’t crazy, but she’s also not the same. After they teamed up against the Rat King, Karai asked him to be an advisor, so he gave advice and she listened. He began to think he could help make the Foot Clan not straight up evil and felt he was making progress. All of that ended when the rival clan showed up. They push Karai’s buttons and it feels like she’s not thinking clearly anymore. He’s worried that if someone like Karai becomes unpredictable, that could be dangerous for everyone.
Little does Casey know, but Karai was eavesdropping on his entire conversation. She disconnects from the call as a voice says they told her he was treacherous. Karai disagrees, saying that as a good advisor, all he has done is express concern. The voice tells her that if she trusted Casey, she wouldn’t spy on his private conversations. Karai rises from her desk and says she only listens to his calls with April, since they often discuss Splinter’s sons, and that information can be of value.
The voice tells her there should be no questions about the loyalty of any who serve her and she knows it. Yoshi Chen and his Dog Star Clan threaten her clan’s security, as do the Splinter Clan. It asks if she can afford to give Jones her trust when his first allegiance will always be to a rival. Karai walks upstairs and replies that it is a fair point, but that Casey has always behaved honorably.
She enters her bedroom and the voice tells her that he must be tested. Karai takes a seat at her dressing table. Reflected in the mirror is the Traveler, who grips Karai’s arm and tells her that it can’t hurt to be certain.
