COVID-19 (pronounced /ˈkoʊ.vɪd naɪnˈtiːn/; an abbreviation of coronavirus disease 2019) is the disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Both the disease and the virus are colloquially known as COVID-19 and simply "coronavirus," potentially for simplicity. While primarily a lower respiratory disease, later evidence showed potential of spread to other organs, as well as numerous additional maladies caused by the disease, some of which appear to last well after a body's immune system has successfully fought off the virus and a person is no longer infectious. Though a large portion of humans infected by the virus remain asymptomatic (they never shown symptoms of illness), and many people recover easily, all those infected can easily spread the virus to others, and it proved especially deadly to the elderly as well as people with weakened immune systems.

The COVID-19 outbreak of late 2019 and throughout 2020 was quickly deemed a pandemic, and impacted the daily lives of almost everyone in the world. Healthcare systems around the world became overwhelmed with critically ill COVID-19 patients for which there were often not enough hospital beds, ventilators, intensive care units or health professionals, and hundreds of thousands of people died. Because the pandemic could not be controlled until either most people had become immune to the virus or a COVID-19 vaccine had become available, various governments around the world instituted lockdowns, quarantines, social distancing rules and travel restrictions for their populations. As a result, most businesses and indeed, forms of entertainment, were halted or canceled.

All comics creatives working for a company (Marvel, DC, Image, IDW, etc.) were given a "pencils down" order, meaning that they would need to cease all creations activities as they were not being paid. In particular, Sophie Campbell, contemporary writer and artist of the IDW TMNT comis series, was given this directive. Due to Diamond Comic Distributors' halting of operations because of COVID-19-related disruptions in their own supply chains, all distribution halted between April 1 and May 20, 2020, with DC eventually releasing some of their titles in May directly to customers in extremely limited quantities, although wide distribution and other companies' shipments remained affected.

The COVID-19 rules and regulations directly impacted the release of the following TMNT books, delaying each one by several months past the dates originally announced in their solicits. All issues directly following these are similarly impacted:
