In the IDW continuity, Barry and Billy are a pair of human-born mutant beavers, identical in both appearance and behavior, who live in Mutant Town and operate a 24-hour gun store there. The pair are also violently paranoid gun nuts. They appear in The Cure for You, part 2.

History[]

A decade before the events of The Cure for You, Ivan, Silas and Jennika were involved in a deadly robbery, partially shown during the flashback sequences of the story arc What is Ninja? In that event, Ivan killed an innocent person and fled with Sy, leaving Jenny to be arrested for her role in the crime. In a flashback of a subsequent event shown only in The Cure for You, Ivan and Sy hastily stashed the stolen money through the roof air vents of Barry and Billy's gun store with the intent of returning later to retrieve the money, not realizing at the time that it was a 24-hour gun store that never closes. In the present, the now mutant Silas brought the now mutant Jennika to the same store rooftop in the hopes Jenny could use her ninja stealth to crawl into the vents and retrieve the money undetected. When Jenny refused, Sy went into the vents himself, making a great deal of very conspicuous noise inside the building.

Sy crashed out the gun store's front window, and was immediately pursued by Barry and Billy armed with automatic assault rifles. Paranoidly believing that not only Sy but also Jenny and all the pedestrians around them were infiltrating government agents, the pair adopted a take-no-prisoners attitude and started spraying the surrounding area with bullets. As Sy and pedestrians ran for their lives trying to take cover, Jenny's ninja reflexes kicked in and she hurled a manhole cover at Barry, knocking him out. Jenny expressed token sympathy that the pair had not adjusted well to mutation even as she condemned their impromptu act of street terrorism. In response, Billy accused the turtle of accepting both their mutation and their collective internment, judging that everyone else had come to think of themselves as animals rather than as people. Jenny kicked Billy in the face, subduing him, but Billy again squeezed his gun's trigger. As Sy barely finished climbing a nearby fire escape onto a rooftop, one of Billy's bullets struck Sy in the chest, knocking him off the ledge onto a lower rooftop. But Billy hadn't seriously harmed Sy—the bullet hit the duffle bag of stolen money which Sy had stuffed inside his vest.
