The aurora, also known as the polar lights, is a natural atmospheric lighting phenomenon visible in the skies of the polar regions of Earth. It occurs when the solar winds penetrate the Earth's magnetic field at its weakest points, the North Magnetic Pole and South Magnetic Pole, and the solar energy lights up parts of the sky where it is visible on the Earth's surface nearest these poles. When the aurora occurs in the northern polar regions it is also called the aurora borealis or northern lights, whereas if an aurora exists in the southern polar regions it is also called the aurora australis or southern lights.

The Turtles, April O'Neil and Ninjara see the aurora borealis in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures issue Of Wolves and Men, and Donatello explains the science behind it.
