An alley or alleyway is a narrow lane, path, or passageway, often reserved for pedestrians, which usually runs between, behind, or within buildings in the older parts of towns and cities. It is also a rear access or service road (back lane), or a path, walk, or avenue in a park or garden. An alley can also refer to a narrow street running between houses or businesses, often unpaved.
Alleys play a big part in the world of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as these narrow passageways are often dark, making it easier for them to hide from humans. Oftentimes, building fire escapes let out into alleys, so the Turtles can remain unseen as they climb up to or down from rooftops.
