Synopsis[]
In the lair, the Turtles are watching a horror movie featuring Hook-Hand Mitch. Though Michelangelo finds the action scary, the other Turtles begin picking it apart. Splinter enters the room and turns the television off. He reminds his students that fear cannot hurt you, but it can make you rush into a mistake that will. Mikey compliments his sensei on the lesson and then pleads to have the movie turned back on. Splinter, however, sends his sons out on patrol. Raphael dislikes the idea because it's Halloween and the kooks always come out in force. His wishes are ignored and soon the Turtles are running the rooftops.
There is a full moon, and Mikey points that out, but Leonardo tells him not to be so superstitious. Mikey reminds him that Raph didn’t want to go out either, but Raph says it’s because the hooligans are all hopped up on sugar. Donatello adds that there aren’t any actual monsters. Mikey is unconvinced, as half of their adventures have included aliens, ghosts, and monsters… like Creepy Eddie. Raph asks if Creepy Eddie was the guys trying to teach pigeons how to breakdance and Don says that Creepy Eddie was from another dimension that connected with people’s dreams.
Before he even finishes the sentence, Creepy Eddie’s giant floating head appears before them. He compliments the Turtles on their memory and then sweeps them off the rooftop with his long, forked tongue before swallowing them. They are soon deposited in Nightmareland. Don can’t figure out how, since they aren’t connected to his dream device. Creepy Eddie appears and informs them that on Halloween, whenever someone says his name three times, he gets to have some fun.
Nearby, a whistle is blown and a demon in a suit appears. Creepy Eddie introduces him as his lawyer, Phil. He says Phil doesn’t want him making too many puns or bad jokes. Phil says that the Nightmare King hates them. Raph addresses Phil and wonders if puns are bad why kidnapping four innocent Turtles is okay. Creepy Eddie gets right in his face and says they aren’t innocent, they kept him from finally escaping to the real world. As payback, he sets them a challenge and then points out a yellow brick road. He tells them if they can reach the end of the road before midnight, he’ll send them home, but if not, they’ll be trapped here forever. Creepy Eddie begins laughing maniacally and Phil blows his whistle. He reminds Creepy Eddie to keep the maniacal laughter to less than 1.5 seconds and that he himself can’t harm the Turtles until after midnight. Creepy Eddie says that their dreams still can.
With that, Creepy Eddie and Phil vanish. Leo checks his watch and notes that it’s only a few hours until midnight. The Turtles start out on the yellow brick road, with Raph ranting about what he’s going to do to Creepy Eddie. All of a sudden, the Turtles are swept up into the cars of a roller-coaster ride, with Creepy Eddie’s head mounted on the front. Straps hold the Turtles in their seats and Mikey demands to be let go. Creepy Eddie asks if they know what he has in common with Halloween and says it’s the fall as he drops them out of the cars. They are dumped in a post-apocalyptic New York and the newest nightmare appears – a giant living Pizza Zombie.
Leo quips that he knows how to handle a pizza, you slice it, which he does with his katana. Raph tells Leo that Creepy Eddie isn’t the only one that shouldn’t make bad puns. Mikey calls out that Leo didn’t stop the monster and they see that cutting it in half only created two pizza zombies. Raph takes the cover off a manhole and tells the others that he’s found an escape route. Don says that is good thinking because once the cover is back on, the monster won’t have the leverage to follow them into the sewer. The ladder takes them down to the yellow brick road leading to a bridge.
A lone, cloaked figure stands at the entrance to the bridge and tells them that they may not pass. Having grown impatient, Raph taps the person’s chest and says that they don’t have time for this. In response, the person backhands him and repeats that they shall not pass. He flings off his coat to reveal a skeletal entity that says if they were worthy of calling themselves ninja, they would be able to get past him. Until then, they will not cross the bridge. Leo believes that they are fighting Shibano-sama of the Foot Clan. Shibano easily knocks aside Mikey and Raph while blocking Leo swords strikes. Leo wonders why he’s here and Don reminds him the Shibano is just something from their subconscious. Shibano breaks one of Leo’s swords in half and the Turtle says that he’s fighting like he’s there.
Shibano tells them this is one more sign that they are not worthy and then transforms himself into a giant crab. As they stare at the creature, Raph suggests running and Mikey agrees. As the creature roars, the Turtles start to run but then Leo asks why they are running. Don says it’s because a giant monster is chasing them, but Leo says it’s trying to chase them away from the road. He turns back towards the bridge and reminds them of Splinter’s lesson regarding fear. When Raph mentions the monster’s claws, Leo says that they’re skilled enough to avoid them and demonstrates his point by leaping over the monster to reach the bridge. His brothers quickly follow and Leo explains that Shibano said if they were worthy ninja, they’d get past him, but he never said they had to fight.
As they follow the road, they are once again accosted by Creepy Eddie, whose face is now part of a tree trunk. He shoots off another pun about a guy’s bark being worse than his bite and then displays a stop watch balanced on his tongue to remind them that time is running out. He starts laughing maniacally as the Turtles continue on their way.
A little later they step into is an 1800s black and white German village. They hear someone calling for help and stop when they are approached by Dream-sequence Irma. She tells them that an evil scientist has taken her friend, May, to his castle to be a human guinea pig. Irma begs them to save her. Raphael insists that they don't have time for this and Donatello agrees that no one is really in danger. However, Michelangelo disagrees and asks how they know? Holding Irma by the shoulders, the pair give the other three Turtles a pleading look and Mikey reminds Don that he said this place is another dimension. He wonders if some of the people here are real. Raph thinks it's a Creepy Eddie stall tactic, but Leonardo agrees with Mikey and they go to help save May.
Traveling to the creepy mansion at the top of the hill, the Turtles enter and immediately hear another call for help. Following the sound of the voice, they enter a dungeon where Dr. Madscience is menacing May, who is tied down to an operating table. Dr. Madscience declares that he is not defenseless and calls on his minions to destroy the intruders. A group of movie monsters appear and the Turtles forgo the laws of physics and apply lucid dreaming in order to defeat them. Dr. Madscience flees and the Turtles free May, who thanks them and asks if there is anything she can do to return the favor. Donatello says that they are running out of time to get to the yellow brick road. May tells them that the road runs back behind the castle and if they leave through the back door, they'll save themselves hours of travel.
They follow her instructions and soon find themselves back on the yellow brick road. Leo urges the others to hurry because they must be near the end. However, Creepy Eddie appears and begs to differ. He tells them they’ve reached the end of the road and belong to him now. Raph tells him that it’s not after midnight yet, but Creepy Eddie replies that it’s after midnight somewhere. He laughs and says that now he’s going to get his payback. As the Turtles wonder how they’ll get out of this, Don has an idea, reminding the others that Creepy Eddie gloats with puns.
Don begins to taunt Creepy Eddie, who can’t help but respond with more and more bad puns. Soon Don doesn’t have to say anything because Creepy Eddie is on a roll and Raph just wants to kick him. Then Phil suddenly appears behind Creepy Eddie and reminds him that he was warned about puns. Creepy Eddie starts pleading with him, using all sorts of excuses to say it wasn’t his fault. Phil doesn’t buy any of it and a moment later, the Nightmare King reaches up through the ground to drag Creepy Eddie down below.
Once he’s gone, Don approaches Phil and asks if he can send them back home now. Phil asks why he should and Don replies that Creepy Eddie would hate knowing they got away. This works for Phil and he snaps his fingers, removing the Turtles from Nightmareland and dropping them onto a city rooftop. When Raph wonders how they got out of that mess, Don says it’s because one little detail can make a big difference. He paid attention to what Phil said when Creepy Eddie introduced him and knew puns would get him in trouble. Leo says that doesn’t explain why Phil sent them home. Don answers that Phil realized them being out of Creepy Eddie’s reach would be a real… pun-ishment!
Notes and trivia[]
- Creepy Eddie mentions that whenever someone says his name three times on Halloween, he gets to have some fun. This is a reference to the several horror legends and movies, including Bloody Mary, Candyman, and Beetlejuice in which the titular characters can be summoned by saying their name three times.
- Raphael breaks the fourth wall on page 18 when he looks out at the reader and says that he hopes whoever decided to bring Eddie back trips into a patch of poison ivy.
